Want source of water pump bearings 1948-56

Thinking of doing at least 2-3 water pump rebuilds and machining a holding fixture and some of the replaceable parts but need to find the sealed bearing supply. I have been told that new water pumps and spa pumps use similar. Has someone here found a source ? Wonder where rebuilders today, like Kacinish (sp), found them. Evidently same bearing used on 8 cyl as well as 6 (Stepdown). How about seals ? I am just going to rebuild them for myself and see if they work - don't know if I will sell any. I think Dale Cooper sells them. Gert Kristiansen P.S. still have a few of the oil pump alignment tools left to sell.

I'll look up what pump seal I used for mine and get you the number.
Okay, if I rember right... the seal is a standard #200 or #9281K62 from McMaster-Carr. The seal face on your pump will likely need to be refinished and polished unless you figure a way to use the ceramic seat in the kit.0 -
The bearing and shaft used in the step down 6 and hash 6 water pumps is a standard item used by many car manufacturers over the years, any reasonable size bearing shop should have them. Even though its a standard it's a funny mix of imperial and metric sizes, 5/8" shaft x 30mm bearing OD from memory. The shaft will be overlong and will need to be trimmed to suit, and again from memory there is a slight difference in shaft lengths between the step down and hash varieties.
I do have a write up on fitting a modern pool seal to the hudson pump but I'm away from home until mid July, I'lll put it up when I get back.
I've never looked inside a step down 8 pump, I don't know if these comments are applicable to those.0 -
Bob Ward - your info on a seal for the water pump would be appreciated - and any other advice to be had from the Hudson community at large, Gert.0

The hard part is refacing (machined flat and polished smooth) the seat on the pump body if its badly pitted or crowned, other wise the seal drops right into the spot where the old one was, replacing all of the old seal.0

To machine the pitted surface get or make a disc with a 220 emery paper glued to the bottom (see photo). Put the disc in the drill press and make sure the disc is perfectly square with the surface to be polished. If the surface is pitted you may have to do it a couple times to remove the pit.Once the pit is removed go to a finner emery paper and final polishing with 500 grit. You will be amazed the surface will be just like a mirror.
I have done this numerous time with good results.
When placing the seal be sure to put anti freeze on the polished surface and on the seal surface before assembly.0 -
Sounds like a great idea. Thanks for sharing. Curious why you put antifreeze on the seal surface? I would have used soluble oil. We dont use antifreeze here in South Australia. Regards, Barry0
-
The reason for using antifreeze is that it is the fluid used in cooling systems in Canada ,but you can use soluble oil, the most important thing is to get a little lubricant between the seal and the sealing surface so that it doe not start up dry.
Remember Murphy is lurking at every new start up!!!
The water pump bearing I use is NSK # 885586 .You should be able to get or order it at any bearing place or machine shop.
Both ends of the shaft are long and have to be cut to size. Make sure the shaft ends are chamfered or tapered both ends for about 1/8 in to facilitate pressing on the impeller and flange.0 -
Thanks, Barry0
