Help with water pump on my 1922 Hudson Firetruck.
I got my firetruck out of storage. (Its been there for almost 2 years.) I have tried to put in new pump packing and have come to the conclusion that I will have to remove the shaft and replace with a stainless steel or make a new one from regular stock. The shaft is heavy coroded and pitted, causing it to leak very profusely. From both sides. A short drive of 10 plus miles and I need to stop and top off the raditor. A precaution so that it does not overheat. It runs cool enough that I don't have to worry about the engine getting hot.
Well my question to those in the know is: What is the correct proceedure to remove the shaft and make nessary repairs. Will I have to remove the raditor to get to the front of the engine? And then get into the timming chain area, so as remove the shaft? I don't want to create more work for myself than nessary. Or just starting at the back (gen.) and work up to the water pump and then to the timing area. I want to do this correctly the first time around.

If you can find one, put a later f head water pump on, this will give you much more needed room to replace the packing on the front side. As Geoff said it is a mojor job, but well worth the effort. My father has done this to all of our cars and also used a two peice, threaded shaft. This allows you to unscrew the pump end of the shaft from the timming case side of the shaft, and remove the water pump with out touching the timming chain side of things.
