Which starter is best ?

I am rebuilding a starter for my 1939 Hudson. Went into my stockpile of goodies and came with 4 starters.
Two MAB 4075 (1939 Model)
Two MZ 4079 (1940 Model)
After dissasembly I find that the 1939 starter is larger in diameter and the windings are longer in length,although the length of the shaft from the armature windings to the end of the shaft are the same.
I looked in the Autolite Service Parts Cat. and find all field coils are the same.
The mounting bolt pattern is the same ,so I could use either one.

My question :-
Has one got more torque than the other or is one better than the other?

It would be logical that the more turns of wire moving within the field would equate to more power output. So I would say the larger one is more powerfull,

On second look at those two ,the larger one seems to have farther spacing between the wires. I believe I would count the segments on the commutator. The one with more segments would have more wires. Might go a little slower but should have more tourqe,

Just make sure you use 6 volt cables, number one, on ground, bat to solenoid and to starter. Walt.

The MAB series was used on both 6&8 cyl Hudsons through the 30's and by the 8cyl.
through 1947. It has twice the torque of the MZ series. Info. from MOTOR's Auto
Repair Manual, 1953.
