I know Clifford created one, drag raced it by lying to NHRA & got Hudsons banned from drag racing.

Does anyone know how the 308 was transplanted into the jet. I have read that a firewall from a wasp was used to make it look stock. I believe the hydro was used for the tranny. If anyone has pictures would really be great? I just acquired a Jet and at this point I am weighing different options. Thanks in advance for any info. L Hud

Ol Racer , I think Noel Renner had a Hornet powered Jet.A blue one.
He lived in Ludlow Falls ? ,near Dayton. He is probably in the HET roster.

The one in the Garlits museum belonged to Sloane McCauley out of North Texas. He ran it back in the 60's, maybe up into the 80's.

Olracer & L Hudson - Frank Spring highlighted my comments about the engineering departments build on Jet two doors with Hornet 308 CI engines. To my knowledge, I never saw anything in print covering these cars. I've scoured the "Hudson Service Merchandisers" as well as the "Hudson Dealer News" of the era, but have not seen a thing in print covering these cars. The way the story was presented to us by the Zone Service Mgr, it sounded like there must have been more than one, but I have not idea as to exactly how many were built.

Thanks Jetman. I have posted on a couple of other forums and have had some responses but nothing substancial. Came up with a pic of a couple of Jets drag racing. It was in Hot Rod mag in 1965. The guys racing were named Jim and Ike. No last names were given. Thanks L Hud
  • oleracer; I am doing now, but I am not going to be stock, I am setting the motor back 6", The
motor was in our jet that used to be Ike Smiths. Our firewall was set back about 4", no wasp firewall, But the jet that I have is a 54 jetliner. It has the wasp bump in the firewall from the factory. I think the 308 would go in in stock location. If you want I will send some pictures?
I am also changing to balljoints, and rack&pinion steering. Let me know how you are doing

  • oleracer; I contacted dotty smith, Ikes widow. she remembers the red jet, It was Jim Bells, she is tring to find some more pictures of it. Don, forget to send some pictures I'll send some of mine.

Baby huey, it would be nice if you would post the pics of your Jet. I would be interested in your build. I have acquired an 53 coup and am undecided as to what direction to go with it. I have been trying to gather info on the ones built in the past. If you have knowledge of the past builds, I would hope you would share it with us. Thanks L Hud
  • L Hudson; My partner in another hudson that we had back in the 70s has the green hornet a 53 coup, what i started out to do was revive our jet that we ran in J/G in nhra. It was the jet that Ike Smith ran before. My jet is a 54 jetliner, I still have the motor that we ran. 1/2" strocker, and 0625 over, 355ci, I will freshen up and put In my jet, with the motor set back 6",
I have put ball joints and 91 s10 blazer spindles and rotors, I will put a 9" ford rear end. Lot of work, had to replace the outside framerails, also rack and pinion steering. well I have went on enough, I will post some more pictures, I have posted some before.

baby huey, Thanks for sharing with us. I have a question reguarding the motor mounting. I am assuming the motors were mounted at the same position as the jet engine(front motor mounts). My question is why are you moving the engine back the 6 in.? Please keep in mind I am new to the art of body engineering. Thanks L Hud
  • L. Hud; It is for weight transfer, Yes on our other jet it was in stock motor mounts, Ike Smith had moved the firewall back about 4". I am cutting the firewall, I had to replace all of the floor pans anyway. My plan is to go to the salvage yard and take the floor pan out of a ford aerostar van. I has about a 6" hump in it. our other one that IKe Smith built was run in stock class, no motor set back. some one posted about Ike and said he got hudson ban from nhra, need to remember My partner Gary Ellard has been running a 53 hornet( the greenhornet) for 40 years in stock class. I think that Ike was really stock, if you can find the thread from a few months ago, I forget who it was, but some posted that his dad had a hudson dealership and a guy would bring in a hornet powwered jet in for service, and they all drove it while it was there. I also read one about they were going to enter the mexican road race with a hornet powered jet.
That would make sence for them to produce some with the hornet motor? One more thing, my jet is a 54, the last year for them. It has the wasp bump in the firewall. I checked when i first got it, and a 308 would go in with out moving thr firewall!

baby huey. The jet I have is a solid car. Only rust is in the quarters. It was a Nevada car. In looking at the motor mounts, it looked like the same as a stepdown. Since the jet came with a hydro as a option, I am assuming no alterations have to be made to the floor pan. My jet is a three speed non OD. It looks as though the indentation will only have to be moved back 3 to 4 in. and maybe enlarged some. Not interested in moving the whole firewall. Found a pic of Ike's jet that had the big bulge in the middle of the hood. On the side it said it was a 202. My son said he thought he used a terraplane crank or something. I also found a pic of a hornet jet with the stock jet radiator. I was thinking the stock radiator would work with a larger motor. My radiator is rotten. Having it recored now that I know it will work with the larger motor. Thanks L Hud

Its an old hot-rodder's trick to use the bottom portion of a wheelbarrow to make a firewall indentation. Metal is nicely formed, and you can make it as deep or shallow as you need. Requires some welding skill, of course.

Was the picture of the Hornet powered Jet radiator in a race car or a daily driver. Your talking about another 106 cubic inches. Drag race cars only go 1/4 mile and some racers cool down with fresh water between each race. I'm assuming you want to drive it anywhere. If so, you might want to reconsider your radiator choice. Walts thermostat kit also helps the 308 engine run cooler. I have his kit on my stepdown and it never runs hot.

    FYI
Interestingly, Jamie Bell, searching for her fathers original Red Hornet Powered Jet asked me to Post her Search request and Pictures at the Gettysburg HET National last Wk. As a result of the Posting, a previous owner at the National called Jamie from Gettsburg and told her that he bought that Jet in Ca, then later sold it to a guy in Denver, then it went to the Chicago area and last seen about 2yrs ago. I havent heard anymore and the seach continues...

Lee. This thermostat kit of Walt's , what does it consist of? I think the car with the jet radiator was a race car. I am a old antique tractor puller, I know about getting it hot and cooling it down. Thanks L Hud

Yes, I bought that car from Gus Souza from Chicago and then sold it to Vince Schoenberger who I believe still has it. He races it once in a while and takes it to cruise-ins. His phone 913-287-5095.
  • L Hudson; our jet had a stock radiator, we had a new core put in, cooled great. so good between round we left it running to keep it warm, That use to drive the chevy guy crazy, they would be putting ice on their intake and all, and we would leave ours running. Never had a problem with heat. I am going with a n aulimine( sorry about the spelling) cross flow.
About the bulge in the hood that was a teardrop hood scoop fron the old thunderbolts, as far as the 202, I think that was just for looks. I don't think it ever ran a 202. I will be running the same motor from Ikes jet, have to fresnen up.
    Gene
  • L Hudson; I believe the motor mounts are the same, there is a trick to make solid mounts look stock, I removed the mounts from the frame, they were rivited and tack welded, plan to use them over, the metal parts that is, the rubber was all gone.
