I just took the Pacemaker out for a test drive!!! She is holding the temperature down so I think I have solved the over heating problem (she doesn't overheat at an idle!!!). Definitely need to get help in tuning her up but once warmed up, she idles well. Brakes function reasonably well. I am sure they are fine for a brake system that is old - not like power, disk systems of today. I will let her cool down and check for more leaks but there none when I first shut her off in the driveway.

I hope my wife will let me drive her (the car) with her (the wife) up to Gettysburg this Saturday to see some great cars and see if I can locate a part or two (or more). 90 miles one way.

    Pacemaker-

Yes, enjoy the drive to GB! Should be a blast. Keep in mind that Hudson brakes are superior to anyone else's brakes that I have tried, regardless of time period. BUT, they have to be properly set up and maintained. I can stop my Hudson in at least as short or shorter distance than any aftermarket brake system you could adapt to it, drum or disc. I have that much faith and belief in it because of practical experience. If your brakes are anything less than "blow your mind"-type of performance, there is a problem within your system.

Granted, mine are Hornet brakes, and they have more stopping power than the narrower drums on the PM's, but you should still be able to stop your car with no worries, mushiness, pulling, squealing, etc.
  • RL Chilton: Brakes work fine. I just need to quickly learn my braking distances, etc after driving vehicles with "modern" braking systems like ABS. I would not call mine "Blow Your Mind" but I have none of the issues you mention. Drums were turned, new shoes installed, cylinders rebuilt, new flex lines installed, master rebuilt and system flushed and filled with new fluid in 2008 prior to car sitting again for a little while.

Rick: Springfield, VA, just outside beltway where I-95 joins on SW side. Very near Lake Accotink Park.

HOWEVER, the wife has trumped the drive until I get a few more 45-50 mile trips under my belt and I actually take a drive on a non-Interstate highway near our house at 50mph. Won't get it done tomorrow due to the rain (and the car leaks into the trunk due to rotted weather stripping).

So dont take the wife !!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
  • Trevor J: That would be my death knell.

I understand her concern and it does give me more time to fix/finish things like put some heat shield on the floor, try to get the gas gauge to work, get the OD wiring completed, etc...
