I have a chance to pick up a spare block and pieces. Can anyone tell me the year this engine is by these castings?

Check the stamped engine number, located between the 1st and 2nd exhaust ports on top of the block, If it's the factory number it will start with the model number of the car it was first installed in. These would be the first two digits. You may have to do some scraping and cleaning to see them. Remember the mdistributor 'till 39 was down at the right rear section of the block and 40 - 47 stuck up at the rear of the block behind the head.

Serial number and engine numbers became the same in mid-1938. Previous to that number were different.

Starting engine numbers prior to 1938 were as follows:
    Hudson
    1934 - 30000 to 54339
    1935 - 70000 to 78072
    1936 - 79000 to 89097
    1937 - 90000 to 97082
    1938 - Model 81, 82, - 360000; Model 83 - 980000 to 11630 except 120000 to 13219

    Terraplane
    1934 - (K Special) - 48000 to 102011; (KU Major) - 48000 to 101832; (KS Challenger) - 77291 to 112911
    1935 - (Special 6) 103000 to 155564; (Deluxe 6) 103000 to 154813
    1936 - (61 Deluxe) - 157000 to 246251; (62 Custom) - 157000 to 246326
    1937 - (All Models) 250000 up
    1938 - See 1938 Hudson above.

The above numbers are probably the best that are available - the result of some 35 years of research from many different sources.

An engine re-builder told me that the 35 Hudson and 37 Terraplane blocks I picked up all had casting dates right on them ...those "other numbers" besides the engine number.
