pinion seal

Is it possible to replace the pinion seal on the Dana 44 differential of a '53 Hornet without removing the axle or differential housing from the car? Mine is leaking and I don't want to disassemble the whole works if I can help it.
Thanks

Looking in my Dana manual, it looks pretty straighforward. Just have to remove the yoke to access the seal.0

Thanks for the input Hudsonguy. Now if I can find a gorilla to apply the neccesary torque to get the nut off I'll be all set.

Everybody's a gorilla on the end of a long enough wrench handle, lol0

You can use an impact wrench to remove it.
Use a torque wrench to install it.
A pipe wrench around the flange works to hold it if you use a piece of pipe for a handle extension and wedge it to the floor.0 -
The original seals can be a bugger to remove, I'd start by driving a couple of #10 or so self tapping screws at opposite sides, that is 180 deg apart and see if that starts to get it out, then use small prybars screwdrivers or whatever to get it out of there. Good luck.0

Lock the hand brake good and tight, if it still turns, then lock the brakes by the adjusting wheel. Use a good 6 point socket on a impact wrench. Then tap the yoke to remove it, hitting it on the back side and you will have to play around to remove the seal. The yoke nut then has to be torqued to 125 to 150 foot pounds. Then reset your brakes.
