O/D Operation ????

Park,
I tried the new spring too but maybe my shift rail was too worn. I agree..Not much fun to replace that spring. I did it without removeing the floor. I did remove the transmission mount and did the rest by "feel". Like I said, my current '49 does not slide out of reverse..but it is a much lower mileage car.
My father had the same problem back in 1952 with his '51 Super six. The Hudson garage mechanic showed him the Shop manual that says to take it out of OD. So they knew they had a problem back then. I don't know if that rinstruction ever made it into the owner's manual. I think that may have percipitated his tradeing for a '52 Buick with Dyna-Flow problem solved..... OH NO! To a teenager that was going from cool to geezer! Back then only old guys drove Buicks.. LOL0 -

Tell me about it, Dave, we drive a Grand Marquis --- definitely grandpa material!0 -
Okay, so I am not alone in this. The Jet overdrive is identical as far as I can see, to the Hornet, which has a single lever box, so it's obviously something in the shift mechanism failing to shift the reverse linkage, as the Jet goes into reverse just fine with the control knob pushed in. It's no problem, and certainly much easier than dismantling and trying to figure out, to just pull the control out.0

Geoff, it's not a matter of failing to shift into reverse, it's just that with some cars, with the button pushed in one has to hold it in reverse to keep it from popping out. Not a big problem, just a bit of an irritant.0

Park, in my case, the lever goes into the reverse position, but when I let the clutch out the car doesn't move. I pull the control out, and it goes into reverse gear.

I've always kept my OD button pushed in, but the roads around me are 35-50mph. There's one steep hill downtown where I discovered it is safer having the OD pulled out so the car isn't solely relying on the braking system! MY OD worked well up until a few weeks ago. I must have a loose wire or a bad solenoid (might even be a 6v although system is converted to 12v). I have a relay that's blown an amp, but that might be a part of why my brake lights aren't coming on either. I've pulled the button out for the time being and it was an interesting to feel how the car runs a little differently.0

got my o/d working just fine today. i found a manuel on line for 62 / 67 ford trucks and it was very easy to follow there trouble shooting description. be for we put the rail switch in the car we had taken it apart as we couldnt get continuity across terminals with a ohm meter. had taken it apart got the slider cleaned up and put back to gether backwards. now works super. so easy to make a mistake. put 50 miles on her today and it cruses fine at 70 mph.

Oh yeah , it makes a heck of a differance . Put radial tires on and it feels just like a modern car on the highway. Then all you need is good brakes to match ! !
