If you live in an area where you do not drive the car in cold weather I would recommend either
wiring it open or if possible removing it all together....It's really unnecessary and can be a pain in the neck

  • Best thing is to get rid of it. If it's leaking, to wire it open will not cure the problem. to remove it you have to remove the manifold as it has a pin at the bottom and will not lift out. Drill and tap to install pipe plugs into the open holes, then new gasket and bolt the plate back on. Your carb will run cooler and better gas mileage. Walt.

Good luck on getting a straight answer....I fought THAT battle along time ago and never did get a decent reply.. Just wire it in one position and see if that works.. If it dosent then do it in the other position till you get the best result.

Decided to "just do it". Had to break the two nuts holding the cover on. I used a sharp chisle and a "BFH" split the nuts and then chased the threads on what was left of the studs. They were very rusty and any attempt to remove the nuts with a wrench were going to end up with two broken studs to contend with. The whole thing lifted out with no problem. I ran a 7/16-14 tap in the hole in the bottom of the manifold. Put a short 7/16 stainless bolt in the hole from inside. Made a new cover out of plate steel because the old one was warped beyond help. Used an exhaust flange gasket from my junk box along with some copper RTV and bolted the new cover on. Veeeery carefully with the new nuts on the old rusted studs. Tomorow will be the test when I crank it back up.
OH, The heat riser? Which way is open?... I'll never tell.
