Rambo, Was there any doubt that we were all sick? Now, where can I buy a few PEZ dispensers?0
-
Tom-
Obviously nothing yet has happened. But I'm reasonably sure that solutions will present themselves one way or the other in short order.0 -
I believe Mr Richard Riggs was the person closest to him and his place. He may chime in with some update info. I know he is a HET member so dont want to post his email so he doesnt get bombed with emails.

(Well, I don't think there are enough rebuild candidate cars that still cast a good shadow for all the parts that are out there. Also not enough guys young enough to invest 2-3 years to rebuild them. I too am over the 3/4 century mark and still have 2 on the burner (40 coupe & 46 PU) and 4 on the road to take care of. (36T, 47PU, 29 C and 52 HH) 2 for sale that I'm never gonna get to and 2 to scrap. And 2 Jeep trucks besides.
I went to the Smith auction this spring and several 308s were going to the scrapper for $40 each. I got the gasket board including 15 NOS head gaskets for 212, 254 and big 6 and 3 NOS timeing gears for $3. Had to pay Frank for a couple of upper grill bars I was sleepin on tho.
49SS for sale $500 all there and runs. 51 Hollywood automatic with smashed roof. Motor turns $900. Good running 52 Black/Boston Creme Twin H Hornet sedan $12,5000 -

I knew Jim all my life. My father did business with him in the 1960's and 70's. I visited his property several times and was amazed at the mass of cars and parts he had accumulated. Buildings full of NOS parts, stacks of differentials, Hudson memorabilia, etc., and a lot of complete cars in rows around the property. He would come and visit and take me for rides in his cars. He did this because he knew of my love for cars. I saw him two weeks before he passed away.
To the right person (web seller) that knows Hudson's it could be a gold mine. Whoever says its worth 1K is disrespecting him and his family. Someone smart will buy all that inventory knowing its one heck of a deal. If these where say "Chevelle" cars and parts, it would be valued at 7 figures.
Jim was a fireman and a hero. I remember going to the hospital when I was little with my parents when he was badly burned in a fire. He must have been fighting for his life.
I also remember his wife as being a very nice lady. She kept a very clean home. I imagine she didn't like Jim's hobby but put up with it because she loved him.

Tom,
Since you are a member of the of the Northewst Chapter of the Hudson Essex Terraplane Club, and know most of the members of the Northwest Chapter, I would think that you would have information to share with us regarding the Harmon Estate.

So from what I have read in the dozens of posts above, this is mostly speculation about cars and parts and some bad-mouthing of Jim and his wife and not much 'good' balance. The bottom line is that NO ONE appears to have made legitimate inquiry or spent the $25 for the CD inventory or a road trip to find out what is really there. And the thoughts it will all be junked or crushed when it has been appraised at $175,000 are absolutely ridiculous.
What will happen when someone saves all this massive accumulation by buying it for something close to the asking price and starts selling it for appraised value - let me guess - y'all will be griping and grumbling then just as when he was alive and wanted fair value for his time, effort, investment, storage buildings.
My question here a couple days after another Thanksgiving is when will the "Thanks" happen.
I knew Jim Harmon and he was a good and honorable man. I think this thread would have hurt him deeply and might be doing so to any family reading it.0 -
I had a very serious discussion with Jim, before he passed away, about buying his place, Hudsons and all. I also toured the place with the group that followed Jim home after the 2001 meet in Seattle. In the end my wife and I decided that we couldn't take the rain, even though she had lived in Seattle for years before we met. He was asking a fair price for the house and land and the cars & parts. You could put 30 cars in those buildings! Jim was indeed an interesting guy and he had a real trove of Hudson parts. It would be very difficult & expensive to move the parts very far.0

StillOutThere - Please realize I love this club to death and all the people in it, good, bad (not many) and indifferent. But after 43 years of great fun I have come to two conclusions about some of the members herein; 1) Hudson people are frustrated stock brokers - they want to buy low and sell high (and nothing wrong with that); and 2) there are a handful who think the prices in 40 year old price lists are what that part should sell for. I remember back in the 80's a club member who was complaining to another club member about the price the fellow had on a mint, glass tail light lens for a step-down. The complainer was saying the selling price was to high - the seller came back with "price a cheap plastic lens on todays cars!!!"
People just don't consider the time and expense involved in digging out this stuff, cataloging it, finding storage for it and hauling it to meets to try and sell.
I'm reminded of the late Larry Wellman - he missed very few old Hudson dealers in his trips around New England and New York in the 60's and 70's digging out parts from those defunct dealers. I tend to think Larry probably didn't make much of his investment back - but he at least broke even, I'm sure. And there were others in other parts of the country who, at the same time, were doing the same thing.
