Thanksgiving Trip

I decided to give my 50 Commodore 8 a real road test. Tuesday 11/20 my 2 kids and I left Tecumseh, Mi. headed to Franklin, Tn.. They'd asked sometime back if we could go in "Rocky" , he was named by my son. Car performed flawlessly down and back and got a bit over 18mpg. It is a great road car, drives perfectly, comfortable and just plain fun driving. Oil consumption was bout half quart. Engine now has a bit over 6k on it, still rattles but runs great. Drove it today, first time since Sunday night. Bout one turn and running, not bad for 30 degrees out.

    My 48 Commodore 8 also got great milage I thought. 18 generaly but up to 21 a few times . Just depends on your speed and how hard you are pushing it. If you are loafing along on a two lane at 50 or cruising down the interstate at 75 . Makes lots of differance,

    I plan to make the same trip after Christmas,but with a gear change. I'm gonna install a 3.58 chunk. I'm anxious to see how that combo works. Hopefully, I'll be the one passing everyone. Folks seem to think the posted speed limits are just suggestions.

    Kim, lot of states getting rich from drivers who make that assumption!!! LOL It's disconcerting to be cruising 5 over (around here limit is 70) and have drivers blow past doing at least 80 or more. 18 wheelers are especially bad about speeding - I've seen to many multicar accidents on I-40 and I-81 with at least one 18 wheeler in the mix.

    Alex, try Texas route 10, west to east, if you are doing 90, the trucks come right to your rear window and flash their lights to get out of their way. I've traveled it a few times and pushed the trucks, my 53 coupe idles at 105MPH. My 2.73 rear ratio helps. At 75 I get 22 MPG. Walt.

    And certain parts of Texas now have 80 mph speed limits. Way to high for 90% of the idiots out there. I'll stick to the old U S interstate roads - U. S. 40, U. S. 50, U. S. 64, U S 79, etc.
    All you got to do out there is worry about finding a rest room!!! Or rig a relief tube out thru the floor - don't have to stop that way, except for gas now and again.

    <I've had 11 great road trips in our 53, which just turned 141,347 miles in 12 years, had to miss this years National as the doc told me Margaret could not travel in a long car trip till they find out what is causing pain in her lower back. With all this miles, engine has never been touched with the exception of valve adjustments before I started cross country. Valves set cold, 17-20 and when returned set back to 14-17. Still have 130 pounds in all cylinders. Walt.
