Temp gauge problems

The temp gauge quit working so I ordered a NOS gauge from Ebay. It didn't work either. I have the old gauge, a spare from a parts car, and the NOS and none of them work when one terminal is grounded and the other attached to the positive terminal on the battery. Based on that, I doubt the problem is the sender. I am seriously considering trying to find modern temp gauge that will fit in the instrument panel. Anybody out there that has done that in a 48 or 49 Hudson?

A wire may have become undone behind the dash dedicated to the temp gauge. If all appears well, I'll bet the sender has failed, or lost its ground, due to crud or use of teflon tape around the senders threads. Check continuity of the wire from sender to gauge, as well as cleaning of all terminals.

Its simple to check the sender ,just take a jumper from the wire on the sender to a good ground. With the key on the temp gauge should move to the opposite position. If it does then the sender is not working. If not then you may have a wire broken or your car may have a voltage regulator for the gauge on back of dash thats bad,

I did what Ron suggested and discovered that the wire going from the voltage reducer to the gauge was disconnected. Both the old unit and the NOS unit work fine, the spare fluctuates. I am thinking about trying to exchange faces on the NOS (which is for a Super series) with the face on the spare, which is from a Commodore. Wish me luck.

You found the problem thats the main thing . My guess would be the face's would be interchangeable,
