Help. Re-babbiting Connecting Rods

[Deleted User]
edited December 2012 in HUDSON
Hi there. After pulling the engine out of the '37 Terraplane and waiting for a decision on the inserts vs re-babbiting, turns out I am forced to do the latter. Looking for suggestions as to the best place to get the work done.

What part of the country do you live? Maybe someone in your region or local chapter can suggest a shop close to home that can do the job for you.

Just south of Buffalo, NY. Egge was suggested by my machine shop with a three month turn around time...maybe...
  • Seem's like 21st Century Hudson does that (Randy Maas), may be wrong wont hurt to ask

Randy Maas has one of my eight cylinder rods as we speak. He does great custom work.

They do superb work and have a speedy turn around time.
    Good luck!

I would stay away from Egge. I had a bad experience with them.

  • @ PAULARGETYPE - the engine is out and at a local machine shop for rebuild. If you could give me measurements for the ones you have in stock I can put a call into the shop to measure the ones they pulled. Thx.

Regarding NOS rods: assuming that Joyce could obtain some NOS babbited rods, would she not want to have the machine shop balance them as Hudson had done originally, for a smooth running engine? Didn't Hudson weight the rods and make sure each one weighed the same as the others by grinding off metal?

@ Paulargetype, thanks so much. I am checking all my options but NOS is certainly appealing .

This guy has been in business for decades. He's done Hudsons all the way from a '13 6-54 up to late 8's.
Vic Terell in Escondido, Cal. (my old stomping grounds), at 760-749-9663, call only on Mon., Tues., & Wed. There's also a great shop in town for grinding cranks & line boring too as well as a body & paint shop that specializes in doing vintage iron.
  • @ Geoff - going with Karr in Montana. Hubby talked with the guy and he seems very knowledgeable. Turnaround in three weeks (hopefully...) The machine shop also spoke with him and were happy with what he had to say on the subject. :-bd

    Joyce:

Here is another re-babbitter, given to me by a local old-car garage. But the garage owner has no experience with the fellow, merely word of mouth:
