Oil leak
My 262 is dripping oil out of the dust cover for the tranny. I havnt inspected it yet because I just installed the thermostat adapter Walt sent me. I just noticed it. Before ordering a rear main seal I have some questions. I recall reading somewhere it might be a plug on the back of the block. Can I get an explanation? And also awhile back I picked up a 308 block from lee Odell and he was going to install the rear main seal without pulling the trans out. Can someone elaborate on this. Is this the rope seal or the new neoprene seal.
Thank you
Thank you

Walt here, no way can you install a modern neoprene rear main oil seal with out pulling the tranny, and flywheel. The upper half is in a bolted section and no way you can get the old rope seal out. I have a friend that tried it that way and damaged the seal surface. Now he has troubles. Walt.0

So the only way is to pull the engine and tranny together?0

If you pull them out together, you still have to remove the oil pan, trans and flywheel, then the rear main and the 3 bolts that hold the upper half housing. Clean all good and put the housing back on and the slide the seal in, cutting lip facing front, then install in main cap and now you must seal the main good with the packing in the 2 side holes. Do not rush on this job. Walt.0

Make sure it's engine oil and not transmission lube. The front seal as well as the clutch housing bolts can leak tranny stuff.0

super651 here, the top bell housing bolt to the top right about 12;30 its the long bolt that takes a 5/8 scocket can leak engine oil at the threads. It is tapped into the block and comes out into the valve spring and lifter back cover. Remove it and coat the threads with some type of sealer, and reinstall it. ( the oil will seep down the spacer plate and will look like it is the rear seal)
I have also seen this bolt missing on a few engine replacments. It will leak on a STD or AUTO matic trans as the same bolt is used.

I had trouble with my engine . I thought the oil was comming from the rear seal but turned out to be the hole where the distributor goes in . I used a oring. But after replaced oring with proper seal from Rudy no more oil leak . Thanks Rudy0

Thank you for the explanation. I will check and diagnose. It's not tranny fluid. Again thank you0

As they said about the old piston engines in aircraft, "If it's not leakin' oil, you'd better check it, 'cause there's probably no oil in it."0

Thats what the old guys always told me about my Hudson ,If it taint leekin its low on oil,

That is a lot of baloney about Hudson's leaking oil. I drive across the country in 6 days, 3,300 miles and never a drop on the ground. You have to take your time and do the correct job, and now we can order and install a neoprene oil seal. When I did my engine, 141,000 miles ago, I used a dodge neoprene rear main oil seal. Walt.0

Oh come on Walt . . . you know they a are just joking when they say things like that. Sometimes old guys tell me stuff that sounds a liitle bit off but I know its meant to be entertaining ,

I wouldnt be to concerned unless its leaking alot of oil. When these cars set for along time they somtimes leak for a while after you start driving them. I have had them run a steady stream of oil after they have sat for a year and eventually it drys up. Besides the oil leak will rust proof the underside of the car. I know they didnt leak originally but these are not high tech machines so dont worry about it unless its excessive like 1 quart to say 500 miles. That isnt even bad if you only drive them 1000 miles or so a year. I had a cracked oil line on the oil filter and drove the car 150 miles and used 12 quarts of oil in 150 miles. Now that is excessive. This was years ago and have put probably 75000 miles on the car since and it has not shown any damage. I dont get to excited about oil leaks until spots show up on the back bumper. Beside when you get as old as these cars what doesnt leak and that goes for the driver too. lol0
