Are all 48-54 stepdown 4dr outer perimeter frames the same and interchangeable?

Has anyone removed a perimeter frame and installed it onto another car? Are they spot welled in place? Difficulties?

Yes, the outer perimeter frames for 48-54 Hudsons are the same and interchangeable. You might contact Ron Fayette to obtain his recommendations as he used both manufactured pieces and donor car frame pieces to repair the frame on his 1951 Pacemaker convertible.

Hudson manufactured their frame pieces using a stamping press to bend and shape the metal then using a jig, spot welded the pieces together. In the past there were replacement frame rails available which were manufactured for body shop use. Some examples of these pieces periodically show up, but they are quite scarce.

You also have the option of manufacturing the necessary repair pieces using metal bending and stretching tools as shown in the attached pictures. The manufactured parts are then welding to the existing vehicle.

    Thanks for the good information.
I know where there is a 1950 Hudson parts car cheep that has a rust free frame if anyone might be interested. The owner wants the car gone by April 30th. It is located in the city of Winnetka in the San Fernando Valley, CA. Also, there is a 47 Hudson parts car there that must go too. If interested send me a PM.

I also have a 51 four door rear body section. The rockers up front were swiss cheese, but the rear of the body is darned nice.rear springs still in place. Differential is junk. Rear fenders have a few rust spots but the underpinnings are solid. I cut off the front end at the rear of the front seat riser. Rear seat floor pans perfect. Complete roof and rear window still attached..free for the taking. I used the front end to repair collision damage on a 49. Located in Melbourne Fl.

For what its worth I fixed mine in the CC welding shop by using plate after putting it through a roller and spot welding - even made a few rt angle brackets to reach solid steel - did the same all around until I was satisfied with the overall structure integrity. It does take a lift some MIG skills and the removal of the bolt on quarters n rockers but you then know its right.
