Is there a place where I can get a rebuild kit for the 3 speed trans in my 39 Hudson?

I have some good used second gears with new semi finished white metal bearings with a new end thrust washer. Semi finished so that you can bore it to fit the shaft that goes into it. All modern seals are available as replacements for the old seals. I used bronze bushes to replace the worn white metal bushes on the bottom first/reverse shaft. The only bearing you will have trouble finding is the one at the top/back - the one with the circlip. This has been mentioned in previous threads. ozhudsonatgmail.com use the @ symbol

Thanks barrysweet52, I will be in touch. It wont be until late spring that I start the project. As far as the gaskets go, any Idea where I may find those? Or that what is meant by seals? I am new at this so forgive my inexperience.

Dale cooper has gasket sets and seals. There are also a lot of NOS gaskets around for the covers since they didnt change much year to year. When they say seal its generaly around a rotating or moving shaft. A gasket would be on a stationary cover or plate. A lot of the gasket or seal "sets" contain both,

Thanks Roger for the explanation. With that said I believe my shaft seal is leaking. The owners manual says use SAE 90 oil for the trans. (80 in the winter) I will try and find that seal and R2 and drain and refill trans to see if it still leaks. WIll try Dale. Thanks again. :)
  • The rear seal is the easiest to fix as you may guess. And the one most likely to go bad as driveshaft moves so much. Look at the piece that holds the U-joint closely when you pull it out . The it is the sealing surface and sometimes the rubber will actualy damage the steel. Not a trmendous issue as the new seal may sit on a different spot anyway.

  • Yes I have seen sleeves available ,where would he get those if needed ? I have also heard the new production seal sits in a different spot . Thats is what I was expecting he would get from a part store . You could maybe even put the seal in backward and utilize a clean surface ? I have never done so but heard of it being done in a pinch,

Be very careful that you have all the workshop data before you tackle a rebuild of this transmission. They are a Hudson exclusive design, and need specialist attention.

Stainless steel thin wall speedi sleeves are available from our local bearing shop. Geoff had a thread here recently looking for the needle rollers in the '34-'40 transmissions. They are 3/32" by 5/8", 26 reqd. Good luck, Barry
