Hello all,

I am restoring my '52 hornet and while the front clip is out I would like to replace all the bushings, sway bar mounts, and maybe more. Does anyone have any current part numbers for the bushings or swaybar mounts? Or are all the same standard part?

Attached are a few photos of the bushings by the control arm. I need to replace them too.

While I have this all torn apart, are there any other parts I should replace? I have not driven the car yet so I'm not sure it needs a full front end rebuild, but if there is something I should be replacing anyway please let me know, i'm all ears.

Thank you

JMed--Contact John Fromm (Rochester NY) at 585 723 8669 or email him at HETjfromm@wyble.org (drop the HET) He probably can help you with the parts. Sway bar links can be purchased at local auto parts places. Ask for links for a 78 - 81 Chevy Malibu.

  • The only thing generaly worn in the front end is the center steer assembly . Have someone gently rock the steering wheel back and fourth while you watch under the front of the car.
It the arm on the unit moves up or down more than a fraction of an inch its too loose. Rebuild kits are available for that. The one photo you show is the top of the shock I believe.
To check for loose A-arm joints pick car up till weight is just off wheel . Place pry bar under wheel and push tire up and down ,watch for play in joints. Dont expect to see much.
Grab tire and push & pull and watch tie rod ends for play. These do were quite often and are available quite readily,

Thank you both, I'll be looking for worn parts and with luck all will be well.
  • Expect to fix the center steer unit and maybe a tie rod . And the stabiliser rods on each side do loose thier rubbers

Is the center steer unit/assemply the part that is below the oil pan, where the tierod ends connect?
