I saw one of those on a 49 Hudson this weekend on some site that I was looking at. Cannot remember where, but I thought they looked quite nice. It was easy to see that it was a custom. It was a convertible parked in a drive in....

I saw similar or the same tail light fixtures on a Hudson that had been sold by Jim Moran's Courtesy Motors Hudson in Chicago (the junked stepdown had had a metal Courtesy dealer's badge on the trunk lid). I'm sure these two add on lights are hard to find. But, for $500.00 starting bid? I see they're being sold by someone who lives where I live, Palatine, IL.
  • Could not recall till you mentioned him ,but yes it was Jim Morans dealership ,

I think the opening bid is a little steep- I don't know of anyone who wants to make his Hudson look like a Cadillac.

But for the purist, there's a set of stepdown tail lights at the bottom of his page for $250.
  • He must plan on delivering them in person ,he wants $100.00 for shipping

  • I SEEN A NOS PAIR OF THEM AT BILL AND CHARLIES WHEN I WAS HELPING THEM SORT OUT PARTS TWO YEARS AGO.
  • There must have been more than one year or type of those he made. I have seen some that seem to have been smaller . Anyone else recall another type ?

Who would screw up their Hudson by putting those on?

Thanks Twin-H, that was where I saw the photo. I kinda like that photo of the Ad; The big chrome bumper attachment and the custom tail lights. Give kinda nice touch. I doubt that I would ever put a set on a car if I had them, but I do get a chuckle when I see the photo.

I see the look they were going for there Brownie. Now they still need some long CB antenas, two of them with green tennis balls on the ends, some nice big mud flaps with reflectors, and hang a piece of leather or rubber to drag around up under the back bumper there, to look like a grounding strap. :D

Seriously. I'd give $40. for those tail lights. They would be interesting in a display case, along with the above advertisment. But I wouldn't put them on a car.

There is a yard in Idaho that had a few of these custom tail light add on's last time I was there. I saw two different ones on two 50's Chevrolets, one on a 51 Plymouth and another on a 49 Packard. All were different? None looked like these. My guess would be that Western Auto made some big bucks on those parts? It was fun to see them, but like you-all (the southerner in me) said, would not put out good earned money for them. Kinda like chopping the top on a car. I have seen a lot of them that looked really bad, some looked quite good--but never thought about doing one. Except that 63 Mustang "stationwagon" we did back in college......

Those were ugly when they came out, ugly last time the subject came up on the forum and the look still hasn't changed. I've always thought one of the best features of the step-downs is the back end and those lights cut right into the pretty round lines back there.

I always thought if you wanted a Cadillac, then you should buy a Cadillac.

I agree with Bent . . . like to have a set in a display case for about $40-$50. On a car? Not a chance.

Got to give Jim Moran some credit. No telling what JMA associates and SE Toyota is worth today. That fellow was an innovator despite selling some '50 Caddie light kits. Was working in a new car dealership and here comes the slickers from JMA selling add ons and snake oil, wearing a fancy zoot-suit and talking fast
