Vacuum Boost for Wipers

Was there a vacuum booster for the wiper system available for the 1950 model year?

I can;t find one listed for my Pacemaker, but I thought I would start looking at other Hudson models and see if it
can be retro fitted.

More just thinking about things as I sit waiting for the rain to stop.

  • Any of the double fuel pumps for the stepdown cars should work on yours . There are also electric vacuum booster pumps around that can help 6 & 12 volt.

A vacuum storage tank helps with the loss of vacuum when accelerating or pulling a hill.

Where is the vacuum port for the wipers? Combination fuel pump part # is SP300203 for all 6 cyl ( AC model AJ 1539108 ). To be candid, don't expect miracles under throttle. The wipers will still slow considerably. If you don't mind an unauthentic part in view, lostmind is correct about a vacuum storage tank. They are cheap: about $15.
  • Better check first that your wiper motor holds vacuum. Use a vacuum pump on the motor to see if it holds vacuum, if not the motor needs to be rebuilt. It should hold 15 inches of mercury and not drop. If can not hold vacuum, even a vacuum tank will not help, as it must be rebuilt. Walt
  • Wiper motor is a fresh restoration from Ficken Wiper Service. I have the dual-action fuel pump on my Pacemaker. It is OEM (but rebuilt).

    Everything works as it should.

I am sort of thinking out load (or typing on the keyboard) wondering about the vacuum storage tank.

I am not opposed to having a few non-standard parts under the hood if it means I can drive the car more often.

    A couple things:
If your present wiper runs slowly even when the car is idling, it may need to be rebuilt. You should start by having it rebuilt, then deal with accessory pumps or tanks if rebuilding doesn't solve the problem. Be aware that, at a certain point in its life, the housing itself may warp, making it not rebuildable. A good rebuilder will tell you that, and not waste your money. Fikens (on Long Island) advised me of this problem. (I was then fortunate to find a NOS one on Ebay at much less than the cost of rebuilding.)

The other thing is a question: are vacuum tanks really worth installing? Won't they just smooth out the operation during brief acceleration? If you head up a medium size hill, will they actually keep the wipers running all the way to the top? Has anyone had experience with using a vacuum tank?

  • Don't forget to keep the wheels lubed properly o the cables . They can get stiff and slow things down. Also use Rainx it makes wipers move faster . And if the worst happens and you get stuck in a downpour remove right wiper arm. Will drasticallysbypeed up ssweeping speed.
  • @Jon B: Wiper motor was just rebuilt by Ficken's.

I like your second question which I guess is the overarching thought that caused me to post my question.

@Tallent R: Understood. I have done RainX inside and out. I will double check the lubrication. Is sewing machine oil good for those wheels?
  • Yes that would be fine
