My 55 Hudson Rambler 6 volt auto trans will not crank over. It will start by jumping the solenoid. Anyone know the way to test the system?

Well I would say replace the solenoid. If it starts jumping it then it would be the issue.

At some point I got tired of buying new solenoids, so started taking them apart when they quit working, and usually, the contact point on the copper disk has built up corrosion. You can either buff it up, or turn it a quarter turn, and you're back in bidness. And if it still won't work, you're not out much.
  • I replaced the solenoid same issue. Is there an adjustment on the steering column, looks to be some type of sping loaded switch?

There should be a neutral safety switch that keeps it from starting if the selector is gear.
You can temporarily jumper the wires together to test it.
Block the wheels , be sure you're in park , and set the parking brake.
if it starts , you need to either adjust or replace the switch.
  • To start the car you put the selector in neutral, turn switch on, and lift the gear selector up. There is no park the starter switch is located at the bottom of the shift tube. Car will start with key on and jumping the soleniod.

Ask Paul Schuster. He really knows a lot on 55-57 Hudsons, and Ramblers were made by the same company.
  • I did talk to Paul, he was great help. Not much adjustment I'm going to file down the parts so it will fall into place. Thank for all of your ideas.
