U-Haul Quote

When using the on-line U-Haul quoting tool, Hudson is not an option. Any suggestions in selecting a vehicle to "substitute" ?? I am not going to drive the Hudson to U-Haul for "inspection."

I was going to suggest maybe a 1950 Buick but that's not an option either.

While I was looking around, I saw this on their website: Never place a vehicle-in-tow on the auto transport trailer that is different than listed on your rental contract.

I don't know what the consequences of using it for something different would be but you might want to talk to someone directly rather than just reserving online.

You could always do what I did - use it as an excuse to buy a trailer and truck to tow it with. :D
  • I was afraid I would have to go to U-Haul with the car.

    Thanks.

    Ed,

I had the same problem a few years ago. Call the U-Haul 800 number help desk and ask them to look up your Hudson in their database, it's probably there. When you rent the trailer, the dealership they may need to call the 800 number to verify the information. I suggest talking to the dealership you are going to use a few weeks in advance so that they can become educated in the process. I have never had to bring the car to them to have them check it out "If I could drive the car here to you to have you check it out, I would not need a trailer to move it!" I have also told them it's a 2003 Pontiac just to avoid the hassle of educating them, it's easier.

  • I could drive the Hudson, but I have too much other household stuff to transport that the Army movers don't touch (or we don't want them to touch) and our stuff is going into "Storage In-transit" while we close on the new house. The miles to drive three cars and all the stuff just say get a U-Haul truck and trailer.

I have seen Penske and Hertz auto trailers in tow behind their rental trucks. You might want to check with them.

I've better luck dealing with local dealers. They're usually more interested in making a rental than abiding by all the restricktions. Face to face is better.

You might consider getting a quote from one of the transport companies that transport classic cars. (Horseless Carriage is one of them) They may not charge too much more than renting a trailer and pulling it yourself, especially when considering the drop in gas mileage for the tow vehicle. Plus, your car is carried enclosed keeping it out of the elements. There have been a couple of threads on this in the past with some contact information. Just a thought.

I used U-Haul last October to tow a Hudson. They had the listings and demensions on their computer. I also found it on their online site. So rented their larger trailer and towed the Hudson home 300 miles with my F350. They even helped me secure the vehicle on the trailer.
  • I don't trust a business that only puts part of their system on the Internet. If U-Haul wanted my business, they would put the Hudsons in the database on-line. I should not have to call and ask. That is what the Internet is for.

Now if I were in need of a Hudson specific part, I have no problem calling and asking questions.

All I want to do is rent a trailer big enough to hold it. Penske/Budget is getting my business on this one.

    You're hauling a '99 Lincoln Continental. That's your story, and you're stickin' to it. . .

I'LL JUST BET THAT U-HAUL MUST GET AT LEAST ONE OR TWO INQUIRIES EVERY 5 OR 6 YEARS FROM SOMEBODY WANTING TO HAUL A HUDSON....

HOW RUDE OF THEM NOT TO INCLUDE THE INFO IN THEIR DATA BASE...LOLOL
  • Tom, I understand that. However, if the Hudson is in the system when you walk-in to the franchise or call the 1-800, it should be on the website. This says "lazy" to me and makes me wonder what safety items they have been "lazy" about with equipment service.
