Identifying Some Things Under the Hood of the '46
Hi All,
Semi-successful weekend working on the Hudson. Have a couple of things under the bonnet that I am not sure what they are/were for. I have attached pictures. I am wondering about the vertical black hose which is attached to the rear firewall. This hose is not currently attached to anything at the bottom of the hose. At the top it's attached to a fitting that seems to go under the dash.
Send item is the black hose (which isn't really a hose just a black rubber sleeve housing a metal rod) laying on the engine block (picture 2). I THINK this hooks into the hole in the tower above which it currently sits, and ti think this whole mechanism is connected to the Weathermaster system and is connected to the lever that you can slide from "cool" to "hot". If that's the case, not sure how it hooks into the tower.
BTW, can anyone point me to a diagram (a la Chiltons or Haynes Manuals) of the engine compartment of a 46 Hudson 8? Since I've had so many things on mine either removed, disconnected, alternately connected, or otherwise "rejiggered" a diagram of how things are supposed to be, with labels of what things are, would be most helpful.
Thanks
Keith

#1 is drain hose from the bottom of the heater housing. Any water entering the cowl
vent exits here rather than on the interior floor.
#2 Is pic. of the hot water valve for the heater . I see the broken cable which is from the lever on the bottom of the heater housing. Don't force the valve lever very hard. Its brass, and breaks very easily. Another lesson learned the hard way! This valve can be disassembled cleaned and a new sealing gasket installed. (If the screws turn without
breaking) Patience and gentle tapping, after penetrating oil usually works for me.
( Sometimes maturity brings an increase in patience)
Good Luck!0 -
Rick your right, but I don't find I'm getting more patient as time goes by. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?0

Not old enough! Retirement and grown kids helps a lot!0

Cool guys!
1) genius idea on Hudson's part.
2) The screws turn with no problem. I had actually assumed that the cable goes into that little valve lever, put it in but then took it back out since I wasn't sure that was what it was for. It seems to go in there pretty easily, but when I pull the level on the WeatherMaster it falls back out so it's probably missing a part.
Patience.....yeah I've been learning a lot of that lately! :-w0 -
You wont find to much of that type of info in a Chiltons type book . They will have general repair data and some photos of major assemblies . What you need is a Hudson service manual ,Alex has a lot of them on line now .
And the club store sells reprints of a lot of them,

Yeah I've got the online one. What I meant was it would be nice to find a diagram of the engine compartment like what a Chilton's manual usually has. I haven't found just a good overall engine compartment diagram in the service manuals. Oh well.0

Yeah I know what you mean ,
