Local Hardware Stocks 1940 Hudson Bolts, Trivia

Saw these in a bucket labeled " 1940 Hudson ???? ", so I couldn't refuse to purchase a few. Can anyone identify and authenticate this claim? I was pretty shocked to find 70 year old Hudson bolts kicking around a Buffalo shop. 9/16" head, 1/4"-20 thread and 13/16" overall length.

Looks a little odd. Some sort of shoulder bolt, possibly a pivot for something? They don't look familiar as being something for my '37 (which was much the same mechanically as a 1940). I wonder if this could be for some sort of Hudson fastener or hardware company, or might it have been for a Hudson farm implement or sprayer?
  • The clerk said it was for the auto. But of course these kind of claims must be taken with a grain of salt. I thought pivot or linkage of some type, but could be anything. There was a gallon bucket full.

I agree with cargray. I looked at my 47 PU with the hood removed and the prop pivot bolt has 9/16 head and 13/16 length and looks like the bolt in photo.

  • Probably not in huge demand, but I have a great source!! Thanks everyone for your responses.

Maybe you should buy the whole container full of prop pivots. The store owner will be happy to be rid of it. You will be happy to acquire it. You will become the Prop Pivot King. You will have a corner on the market. Millions of grateful Hudson owners will beat a path to your door from across the world, money in hand. You will become wealthy beyond you wildest dreams. All because you put that pail on your bucket list.
  • I believe the Stepdown prop takes the same bolt,

Hard to restore them to that "new" condition . A pair for $8-$10 seems fair.

  • Ken is right, Even on pre stepdown the head is much thinner and the threads are SAE. the BOB DRAKE catalog for Fords has them listed as trunk prop pivot bolts. RD

I needed those for my 47 truck, too bad I don't have a brother that would share. :)
I would buy them up, they are hard to find when you need them.
  • I'll have to ask if they have the washers!! Maybe they have buckets of chrome in the back too! Keep your eyes on eBay. But in the meant time, if any body needs some I'd be happy to send some along.
  • Can some one provide a pic of original nut style and washer type? Also curious, we're these pivot bolts painted body color or left bare steel? Were the props also painted? These small details are interesting.
  • I'd be happy to help. Check your shoulder and thread dims against mine; 1/8" shoulder length and 3/8" thread length, approximate. As pointed out earlier these heads stand taller.
  • There would be a market for them .I have no trouble selling one for $1.00 at a swap meet to a fellow who needs one,
    Roger
