Turning the starter ring gear on the flywheel.

Every time the engine stops it is is exacly in the same position. That's because of the engine stops against the compression. So also the bendix of the starter engine comes into the starter ring gear on the same spot.
You can see very easy that the teeth of the starter ring gear has a lot of marks there and sometimes halve the teeths have gone. It is very simple to knock off the starter ring gear. Take an old chissal make the point with a grinder flat.
Put the flywheel with the backside on a couple of steel blocks about 1" thick and go round knocking on the starter
ring gear with the chissal and a big hammer. The gear will come off very easy.
Now it must be replaced about 30 degrees, so the bendix come in on another place.
The best to do that is in the electric furnace in the kitchen. Heat it up to 260 degrees Centigrade. With two plyers you can take the gear and lay it on the flywheel on correct place. It is better to do this when your wife is not at home, because the smell of the old oil that burns of the ring gear is very bad.
Your old flywheel is as new now and can stand for another 50 years.

.260 is to hot. Has to come off the clutch side. Use very little heat and replace back on the clutch side as it has a slight build up to keep the bendix from pushing it off the flywheel. Walt

Groet, Henk0 -
Walt, I have the manuel from the Railton Club written by John English. This is from 1968. On page 1.21 under M. Flywheel and starter ring gear , John speak about 260-280 degrees Centigrade .
Indeed you must knock on the engine side of the FLywheel.
It was so easy, that I think that at a lower temperature, as you say , it must be possible !0 -
From my engine shop I heard the following :
All things witch must be heated before fitting : During heating spit on it !!
If the spittle stays on the object it is to cold.
If the spittle directly goes over to vapour you have te correct temperature.
Advise : first drik a bottle of water. ( wine is better? )0
