Truth in advertising

So what do you guys think? Here is an ad from eBay for a '54 Hornet with a BIN price of $7,500:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1954-HUDSON-Hornet-Sedan-/151034860497?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item232a6113d1

However the picture that displays in the ad is not the car you are getting...it's a pictorial depiction of what it could look like. The rest of the pics show the real car in pieces and probably not worth that price.

Keep in mind this is eBay we are talking about, so most of the people who click on this won't make the distinction.

Fair or foul?

The link goes to ebay , not craigs list. I saw that my self several days ago , thought that he was on the edge of " Fair or foul" as you put it.

I have been watching this auction since the day it was posted. I think his price is rather high for what you can see. He makes some good comments on the work he says he has done but I do not see seven grand of work. With the rust you see in the doors, it makes me a bit cautious as to what the primer is covering--and it looks like the rust is coming back on the front fender that was primed. A lot of work here and quite a high price. A real gamble.....

I think including a pic of a completed car somewhere in the listing would be OK, but not putting it as what you first see when you hit the listing- Out of line and deceptive, IMHO. Although it doesn't look like its fooled anyone yet, and I'd hope that anyone with $7,500 to part with for an old car would be scrutinizing the ad pretty closely.

As my dad used to say, "Anybody rich enough to swing that deal oughta be smart enough not to."
  • Doc I take it you have never tried to report a listing on Ebay? Go check it out ,they make it so difficult to do most folks give up. You can only report them for things Ebay wants to hear about. Not anything actualy dishonest,

I would willingly pay something that very closely looks like what $7500 could look like, as long it was actually somthething much much less than $7500. Is that a deceptive offer ? Seriously though, those kind of adds frustrate me, misleading at best. I agree with MikeWA .

From Ebay policy" When selling a used, refurbished, or flawed item, include pictures of the actual item for sale, not a stock photo"

Yet, this is not an option from the Report tool...

Ken , agreed. The drop down options are all $$ based...
