The factory suggested antenna (other than the normal roof mounted unit) for step downs was a fender mounted item that all but about four inches disappeared into the housing below the surface of the fender, and it extended up to about 36 inches above the surface of the fender.

Some late 54's had them (on left side) from the factory. They also had a brace bolted to the cowl panel under the fender. kinda hard to replace with the car assembled. LOL

i was looking for one for my 53. it doesn't have to roof antenna, but has what looks like a factory hole by the drivers fender. it has the flat part on the hole where it couldn't have been drilled. i can take a picture if anyone is interested. i would like to get a antenna for it to fill the hole!
  • I have an apparently dealer installed antenna on the left fender of my '53 Super Wasp.

here is the hole in my '53, which i thought was original. anyone know? maybe i'll just look for a older antenna of 50's vintage if i can't find a hudson one.

Hudson mounted all antennas for factory installed radios in the front center of the roof. They made a fender top antenna available to dealers for dealer installed radios that was to be installed in the top of the fender, just ahead of the front door, and had about a12 to 14" tube that contained most of the antenna when it was retracted (only about 4 inches of the antenna showed above the fender when it was fully retracted). The hole in your cowl would indicate to me that an aftermarket antenna was installed by someone on this car.

Here's a pretty good photo of my Super Wasp at the regional Kalamazoo meet last year (2012) showing the location of the probable dealer installed radio antenna. I also added a couple of closeups of the antenna taken today, May 11, 2013.

The July, 1954 Hudson Service Merchandiser has intructions and illustrations on the installation of a fender antenna. Alex Burr has posted for viewing this and all other Service Merchandisers via (hetclub.org/burr/lithomepage.htm).
