transmission

To the best of my knowledge, Chip, all are identical, whether six or eight, 3-speed or overdrive. Yes, the 1941 was a different transmission; the 1940's were basically the same as the 1932's (somebody verify this please!). The 1940 OD was a one year only, based on the '32 transmission, with a top plate that adapted the cable / lever Handi-shift shift linkage to the floor-shifted '32 transmission. I believe the '41's were synchro, which the earlier ones decidedly were not!0

Jon, I'd say close similarity to the '40 transmission goes back only to '36. Maybe the case and some innards go back earlier, but there were some significant differences in some details by '36. And yes, synchro in '41, on 2d and 3d, but not 1st.0

THE SPLINE SHAFTS ARE DIFFERENT ON THE OVERDRIVE, THE STANDARD TRANS HAS 6 SPLINE SHAFTS AND THE OD HAS 12 SPLINE SHAFTS AND THE GEARS THAT GO ON THESE SHAFTS ALSO ARE DIFFERENT 6 OR 12 SPLINE AS ARE THE SYNCROS THE 40 OVERDRIVE SLND. IS DIFFERENT THAN THE 41 TO 470

IF YOU LOOKING TO PUT A OVERDRIVE IS A 39 AND UP CAR YOU CAN USE THE 48 TO 51 TRANS YOU WILL NEED A 46/47 BELL HOUSING IT BOLTS TO THE LATER TRANS AND TO THE 3X5 OR THE 8 CYL ENGINES IN THOSE CARS AND IT IS A MUCH BETTER TRANS WITH PARTS THAT ARE EASYER TO FIND0

I Believe some of the Chrysler product Overdrive parts work on the 40 OD trans.
I can't verify this , but remember reading it some where.
You can also use the later trans as Paul stated , and use a Jeep floor shifter for the earlier cars.0 -
I 'm almost sure the Jeep floor shifter will not be adaptable to the '48 thru early '52 Hudson transmission. It will adapt to the mid-'52 T-86 trans, but that is not adaptable to the '46/'47 bell housing.0

Jetman is correct , brain lock on the single lever trans.
Not sure why it couldn't be " Made" to fit the earlier bell housing?
Redrill the bolt pattern , or is there not enough room?
It's been a long time since I've messed with tese.0 -
'53-'54 transmissions were removable from the bell housing without taking the housing off the block. Earlier versions were were all bolted from the front, and you have to take the whole assembly off the block, which is a pain, and HEAVY! There are differences in the transmissions most years, 32, 33, 34, 35, are all similar but slightly differing internals. '36 and '37 are the same apart from '37 having the heavier 2nd gear retaining clip. '38-'40 are identical, with 12-groove splines, but '39-'40 have column shift, but the tops can be interchanged. You can transplant any of these years by swapping the entire transmission.
As stated, '41 onwards are completely different, but can be swapped by transplanting the entire bell housing and transmission assembly.0 -
...and to further complicate the issue, the Jeep shift lever can be transplanted into the 1952-up Borg Warner transmission -- 3-speed or overdrive -- BUT only the 3-speed will fit into the earlier Hudsons. The tight clearance to the X-member makes it impossible to jamb the '1952-up overdrive into the tight space.
I don't recall whether the 1940 Hudson qualifies as "an earlier Hudson", meaning a Hudson with the tight X-member clearance.
I believe that the 1941-52 Hudson-built overdrives will fit into the ''earlier" Hudsons but not the 52-up Borg Warner-built overdrives. Without major frame surgery, that is. And with a 1940, you already have the column shift, so you could use a newer syncro gearbox and your column shift would fit right in.
(Or I might be wrong about all of this!)0
