Two tone Stepdowns

I have 48 Commodore and I'm thinking about painting the bottom half black and leaving the top gold. The first Hudson I ever saw was my father-in-law's 48 Super that was blue on the bottom and white on top. I'm curious if anyone else has pictures of a two tone Stepdown from 48 to 53 that is painted the way I've described.

Check Wildrick's restorations and Rubber parts website. There's a gold with dark bottom 49 Broughm.

Jason, Hudson for 48 did not make a two tone color with black in the combo, if originality is an issue for you. And no whites at all, only a gray tone like the side panels of this forum. Black was a top color in my 53( avatar)... #147 Seal Gray/ Black roof
Guys, I went to TCP Global website, which has a library of all cars colors since @ 1928. However, I can not get past the make of car and unable to enter the year. That makes it impossible to go further. I have gone there for years without a problem, but few months ago I went to that site and the present issue appeared. Are they out of business? I would think by now after a few months, they would have corrected the issue. Does anyone have info? This is a heck of a loss. They made factory colors in lacquer, BC/CC, enamel or urethane from PPG or RM, with pictures of the chips on line.

Originality is not an issue. In fact, the Texas Tan color the car is painted now didn't exist back in 48. The car was originally a dark turquoise as far as I can tell. Black and Gold are my fraternity colors and I just want to make a change. Thought it might be interesting to see what it may look like.

My recollection is that ALL Hudson two-tone combinations '48-50 were "dark over light" -- you pick the color. Frank Spring insisted it be that way because to the viewer's eye the car was further lower-appearing with the dark top. For '51 (again, as I recall) the market place (customers !) was requesting other combinations and Hudson marketing overruled Spring's design department.

My 50 with two tone color and my 52 with two tone. One followed the Frank rule and one modified it a bit. My 54 is planned for white top and red bottom--a stock combination that did not follow Franks rule? As Mrs. Clinton once said: "Does it really matter...."

In the 1948-1949 Hudsons there were numerous 2-tone (duo-tone) combinatons. Check out the 1948-1949 parts book in the online library @ http://hetclub.org/burr/lithomepage.htm - click on 1948-1949 Manuals file. There's also a 1950 Group Parts book and a 1948-1954 Master Group parts book.

  • @Ron....try using Google Chrome as your browser. I was able to input the make and year and get to the color chip books without issue.

I emailed TCP after my friend was able to enter without issue. My wife is a computer tech. She thought the issue was TCP is a bit behind in updating their site. They, TCP Global, apologized and said indeed they are having issues with IE10 and showed me how to alter my browser to let them in. It works for me now also.

I had my nephew take an old photo and put some black paint on it. Here are the results. Thought I would do a survey to see which design I should choose. Right now the car is a solid gold.

I expect that your #2 looks a bit like this without the lower insert. I did this one just for fun and it only took about fifteen minutes until I decided that I liked the way it looked. I thought that I would add this just to make your decision more difficult..

    Jason-

If you're taking opinions, I vote for below the speedline (bump in the middle of the door) only for the black and gold above.

Sort of. Make the rocker silver and don't put black on the front part of the fender.

Jason, I usualy don't go with two-tone paint for Hudsons. But I have to admit you got me with this one. I like the design very much. Michel

This is the original two tone option on the 1948, 1949 & early 1950 Hudsons. Later in 1950, they switched to the top color down to the belt area on the body, and the rest was then considered the lower color.
