I think I am having a bad day?

Sold a car today. That is always hard!! So, on the way to put the cash in the bank I stopped by my insurance company. Take the insurance off the car I sold and put it on the 54 Hudson. All went well until I showed them the photos. I thought about 6K of insurance would give me time to do my thing and as the condition improved I could increase the coverage. Nope, My insurance company would have none of that. I explained that without insurance I could not get a license plate and drive it to various shops (I do my own work) for work. Sorry, they told me--come back when you get it finished. My agent told me that his company could not do insurance on it because it already looked like a wreck! He said: "what can I tell them?" I retorted, tell them it is a clean, rust free, one owner with new mechanicals ect. "Nope, that will not work." he countered. I said tell them that I have been a customer and doing this for over 50 years--He replied: "They could care less." Did you catch that? "They could care less--they only care about money....." I said to tell them that Hagerty or one of the other antique car insurances would understand and be more than happy for my business. I walked out--- About an hour later he called me and said that they could cover liability only. I am still upset and wondering what I will do...

My insurance co insured my 39 while I have stored during restoration. But once I plate it I will have to go with a company that does antique cars. And not sure what one is best for that. But that is a way off yet so when time comes I will do my research.
  • Brownie, quit screwing around with those Bozos GET HAGERTY :). No problems. They know old cars.

Tell them to shove their insurance where the sun doesn't shine, and that you will cancel any other policies you have with them as well. Whatever happened to "the customer is always right?"
  • Walt here; when I bought my 53 from Albright and had to have it trailered to my house, I went straight to State Farm and put insurance on it, never had to answer any questions, and it was in a 5 year restoration before it ever hit the road.

Brownie, if I'm correct you are a veteran, correct?? If so give Geico a call. I reinsured my 1997 Caddy when I moved to Memphis in 2007 with Farmers for $140 a month. Well, I figured it's a Caddy and it's in Memphis. One day I got a wild idea and called Geico to get a quote. Told the lady I averaged about 3000 miles a year. The quote was $39 monthly. After I picked myself off the floor I asked again - $39 a month, based on milage - the more milage the higher the cost. They had my records on their computer and knew I was a retiree. I guess you know Farmers lost a customer about 10 min later.

I shopped around when I got mine insured- best deal turned out to be Chubb. I pay $198 a year for full coverage, low (maybe no?) deductible, no limit on miles (but can't use it as daily driver), $19,000 agreed value. Has to be in a locked garage. Couldn't beat it anywhere.

I use American Modern Insurance Group for collector car insurance, if you have USAA go through them and they give you a break. I have two vehicles covered and rates are very good and easy to work with.

Hagerty gave me a bit of $780 a year for my three remaining cars. Total value of the three is 90K. Sounds good but I am checking to see what I currently pay.
  • I use Hagerty for all my cars. Seriously they are great. They are project cars and they understand that. I set the value of the cars for them. Provide them with 2 pictures (sometimes they ask for more depending on the car), they approve you right away and email you your insurance cards. I'm pay $130 a year for two cars. My "regular" insurance company....forget it. As long as you have another vehicle that you use as a daily driver, seems like Hagerty is the way to go

Another happy Hagerty customer. .. I had a claim for over 10K when I got rear ended with my 49.. No complaints from me. They were GREAT! Cost? Who cares as long as they pay when it's time. Premium cost is only part of the equation.

I had JC Taylor and didn't like them. I switched to Hagerty and have been very happy. Had a claim couple years ago no questions asked, very good customer service.

I definitely suggest going with an antique-oriented insurance company. Regular car insurance companies are clueless when it comes to anything out of the mainstream.

I've been with J.C. Taylor for probably 35 years and the one time I had an accident they came through, no questions asked. Ken says they're stuck in the 70's and that may be true, but I still pay things with a check and a first class stamp so that suits me fine.

I'm sure Hagarty is worth looking into and isn't there a "Grundy" insurance company too? I'd get quotes from all three. What have you got to lose?

I have Hagerty and a boat ran into my car in the parking lot at work last year (yes, you read that right). Even though the other guy's insurance ultimately paid for it, I went through them and they took care of it.

With the mood I was in, I was afraid of what might happen if some adjuster from Geico came over and said something like "Well, let's see, original price $3500, depreciated over 40 years..."

The guy that did come to look at the car was WAAAY off. He estimated $2400 and it ended up closer to $7500. They paid it with no questions. It had me worried at first but the body shop guy said he had never had an issue with them paying what it took to make it right again.

One little oddity - it happened at work and even though that is explicitly allowed in the policy, they made me send them a signed statement describing how I used the cars insured with them, how many miles they were driven per year, how often I drove them to work, etc.
  • What's a "check" and what's a "stamp"? :D

    "What's a "check" and what's a "stamp"?"

It's what you use to buy vinyl records through the Post Office.

But you have to drive a 37 Terraplane to the post office to make it valid.

I have been with J.C. Taylor for 25 years now and this year I upped my Insurance 5k. I called them and was told,- just send in x amount, no problem. I thought they might want photos but they did not ask for any. I probably have been under insured for a few years and I told them I just had the upholstery done. I have been pleased over the years. Never thought about the online thing because I have always just sent the check, no big deal.

I've been pretty happy with State Farm believe it or not. I pay around $50 every 6 mo with an agreed to value coverage of up to $30,000 without an appraisal and 2 pics. My cars haven't run in some time though so they let me put them on a storage policy of a whopping total of $12 each. I can reinstate when they run again. Now if your Hudson is worth more than that maybe you don't wanna go with S.F. but they've worked out fine for me and the few times I've needed to file a claim they did pay, no aggravation. Where insurance really counts is when you need it to pay out....do they give you a run around or do they actually pay??? If my cars were totaled I'm guessing they would just give me the money....not sure they would let me send them to a shop or not. I'm personally ok with that. Only thing you have to be careful is that if you're restoring a car you have to increase the value of your coverage as the condition improves.

    Which, Hagerty does, automatically.
