'37 Terraplane Engine Colors? (need to know ASAP)
Hi folks, I'm still here. It was a long winter and was hoping to have my engine back from the machine shop by now, but that is a long sad story for another day. Time to have the engine painted - anyone have a picture of the correct color scheme for the six from that year that they could post? Many thanks.

The engine block and head are painted silver, including the manifolds and water pump. The generator and starter are painted gloss black. At least that's my understanding. But wait to see a few more responses before you reach for your spray gun!0

The fully assembled engine less its electronic accessories and carburetor was painted all at one time in Hudson's aluminum silver color on the assembly line. That was the most efficient (read "least cost") time to do it. Most of the accessories were a "not quite gloss" black meaning not full gloss but glossier than flat black or most semi-gloss black. Gloss always looks good when you open your hood to show off your new engine.0

I've found the best match to Hudson's engine color is Duplicolor 500 degree eng. paint, "Aluminum" color. Don't put it on too heavy . . . you want the grainy texture of the cast iron to show.0

Oil pan also black, correct?0

Oil pan is silver, as it was attached at the factory when the engine-trans-
mission was painted.0 -
Thanks all. Ready to rock and roll on the paint!0

Here is the silver that Park suggested. I went with a black clearcoat for the air filter.0

Oh....just problems with the machine shop... We pulled the engine in October and took it there directly. It was determined that the rods needed to be re-babbited so I researched that process and ended up choosing the fella in Montana (per consensus of opinion in the Forum). Hubby was in contact with him and made arrangements with the machine shop to send them out. He also said it would only take him a couple of weeks to accomplish this task. Long story short, it has been evasion and excuse making since October, one of which was that they had a Maserati engine to rebuild (you see who rates at this shop...) When hubby would check in there was always an excuse for the delay (that had nothing to do with the actual engine) and when he threatened to call the guy in Montana to check on the status of the rods, they told him in no uncertain terms, not to call and "make the guy mad". What would he be mad about? Sounds to me that they lost/broke something and were just trying to buy time. Seriously, if these guys could handle a Maserati, which I assume is a 12 cylinder engine, my little straight six should have been a breeze! I understand patience and that these things take time but 7-1/2 months? Its not as if they are doing us a favor - we are paying them after all. As of today, still not done HOWEVER, Keith is picking it up tomorrow and will assess the bill for any unnecessary or extraordinary up charges. It stinks because we could have rebuilt this engine ourselves, the only issue was the actual machining.0

I feel your pain. I put my Essex engine in a restoration shop here locally the week before Christmas. Still waiting, just not quite as long as yourself.0

Got the engine home today...I have a black manifold...0

BLACK MANAFOLD WILL NOT HURT YOU SOME MAY HAVE COME THAT WAY
WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE SHOP SO NO ONE ELSE MAKES THE SAME MISTAKE BOTH THE ROD GUY AND THE REBUILD SHOP IT SELF ?

Hudson owners aren't picky, and AACA show judges don't know. If you had a Corvette or '57 Chevy, THAT would be another matter!0
-
No Chevy for this gal! Another quickie question - is the engine compartment firewall, guards and such painted a flat or a gloss black?0
-
Firewall is body color, and the guards as you call them would be a semi-gloss black0
