Hydra-Matic questions

I am assembling a pile of parts to build a car. I have 54 262 and a H-54 HD transmission. The front seal is missing as well as the torus. I have a single range HD for parts. It appears that the torus from the single range fits up just fine. (I noticed that the bell housings are different) . Is the torus interchangeable? How about the front seal?
Second question. I have a 49 that I will be cutting the center of the cross member out in order to install the HD mounts. What am I missing to mate the HD mounts to the remaining cross member? a picture would be great. Perhaps I can fab those.

'Nuther question. Inside the torus cover are a set of six springs. Just like you would see on a standard clutch disc. They no doubt serve the same function. each pair opposite of each other are differing wire size, therefor stronger or weaker than the pair next to them. Two sets are loose and one set is snug. Is that normal for a HD or should they all be snug like on a standard clutch?.

  • Dave, If you can get a HD car as a donor it would be a lot be easier. I've cut out the hydra ears off the cross member and it works just fine. Just be careful about getting them welded back in the correct orientation and length. A sawsall works better than a torch for this. On trhe questions about single range vs. dual range, get a Hollander book and check out what you can swap out in the transmission section. A lot of single range stuff WON'T work in a dual range job. A Hudson shop manual will also help if the part numbers are staying the same for each model then you know they will swap.
