I had these great plans of driving my 54 as it was--you know, they are only original once. The make her stop part went good after we replaced anything that causes breaking. The getter running was ok until we put the power to her. Each time we do we fry another wire somewhere in the system. Today it was under the dash. Pulled the gage cluster and noticed every wire we could see was bare in one place or another. Well, new plan, get a wiring harness and restore everything on the way to replacing the harness. That means that the dash will be the first to be upgraded...

Checked with X n Y wiring harnesses and they have doubled in price since I bought my last one. Oh well, I guess it has been awhile. Does anyone have a company they like better than X n Y? Also, when they sent me the data they said that they did not have a section for the tail lights, only one they had available was for a convertible. Would the convertible be any different?

Most likely, the only difference would be that the harness runs under the carpet rather than through the roof. Much easier to replaced too! LOL

Also, I forgot to ask. Flexable or rubber brake line. Were all the same? What is the part number for the rear line and who has them or where can I get them. They are due a change

I bought mine from Narragansett in Rhode Island. 401-364-3839. Good service, easy instructions, all circuts and colors very good.
    Hope this helps,

Got mine from Rhode Island Wiring and was very pleased. It has been a while though.

Tailites for the 48-54 convertible runs thru the driver rocker, which in your case (coupe) should be spot welded on. Just have them make it about 4 foot longer on the tailite harness and u should be good. YNZ the best for ease of an installation over Rhode Island

Brownie, I bought the complete wiring from YnZ about three years ago for about 1150.00 They did not list a complete 54 coupe harness then either. I explained that the basic harness from the dash back was the same as 51-53 that they did list for coupes with the exception of the tail light mounting. They made it to fit for me. I even took them my turn signal switch and had them solder in the new wires and test it. I also had them modify the under hood to direct fit a one wire 12 volt GM alternator. Have them look up my info in there records and they can copy their notes if you wish.

Which is the best of the 3 wiring companies for Hudson's ? Y n Z ? Narragansett or Rhode Island Wiring? Who has the best price ?

When I did mine 3 yrs ago I compared Rhode Island to Y & Z and they were almost exactly the same. I went with Y & Z because they are local here in So Cal. I am very happy with the result. A complete wiring harness for a stepdown is about $1,500 complete. Rhode Island sells it in sections when added up was the same. I did include a 12v alternator and some other extras!

If you're not concerned about originality, outfits like Painless Wiring and Ron Francis sell generic wiring harnesses with all wires marked for about a quarter of that- but of course, they'll be plastic wires, non-original fuse block, etc. They come in several "sizes"- that is, number of circuits and length of wires. The hot rodders love them. Pick up a copy of Rod and Custom or Street Rodder for contact info.

I'd like to buy a complete harness but hopefully spend less than $1000. For my '50 Pstepdown I only need wiring between the engine and dash. I was doing it myself but still need a bunch of bullet connectors. unsure of the size.

For my 47 C8 I need all wiring headlight to taillight, 6V plus wiring for OD, and Drivemaster switches. plus extras, hood lights and a rear backup light. and a good source told me the old fuse blocks were not the best, tended to get hot with the 2 30 amp fuses and the breaker and that I ought to use a more modern type of fuse block for the car.

Was contemplating getting one from YnZ Narragansett or Rhode Island.... not sure.

Another option is American Autowire Highway 15 Nostalgia wiring kit. 15 circuits total. Has the original-style loomed wires, but of course won't be color-coded to your car. Will have modern fuse block. $800. Much more assembly required. Mine is on order. Hoping to have classic look but I am not concerned about complete originality. I will have to do more cutting and soldering, though, as this is a make-it-fit harness. Be careful if your car is 6v- wire gauges may be inadequate. I'm doing complete 12v conversion so not an issue.
