MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL THE GROUNDS HOOKED UP THERE IS ONE WHERE THE BATTERY GROUNDS TO THE FRAME, BUT THERE IS ALSO ONE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CAR CONECTING FROM THE ENGINE ( BELL HOUSING TO ENGINE) TO THE FRAME AT THE REAR ENGINE ( TRANSMISSION MOUNT) ALSO CHECK YOUR WIREING TO SEE IF IT HASN'T STARTED TO GO BAD ( WIRES TURNING GREEN ) A FREND'S WIREING WAS SO BAD HE HAD A 8 VOLT BATTERY AND WAS COMPLANING OF POOR CRANKING IT TURNED OUT HIS WIREING HAD A LOT OF GREEN FUNK IN SIDE OF THE COVERING I CHECKED THE VOLTAGE AT THE OVER DRIVE SELNOID AND IT WAS ONLY 3 1/2 VOLTS THIS WAS WITH A 8 VOLT BATTERY WE CHANGED SOME WIREING AND THE BATTERY LEADS AND WHAT A DIFFERENCE THE HEAVYER THE BETTER 6 VOLT NEEDS BIGGER WIRE SIZE THAN 12 VOLT
  • Two gauge would probably be right ,and as Paul said good clean wires and connections ar imperative . Also remember it is is not a 65 Chevy with 12 volt system - it is going to crank somewhat "Slow". If it is starting fine you may not realy have an issue,

Barry, First off I don't like 6V ! but a simple trick is to take all cables off, be sure they are super clean, twist them to break up any corrosion then remount and cover with some dielectric grease. If you are a purist keep the whole 6 v system if not try 12 V for better availability of parts.
I found very little help locally for old car repairs so I unduffed the couch and went to the Automotive Dept of the local Comm College and signed up ! That was in 06 and I did not realize just how little I recalled from my service station days. At least it got me on the correct repair page. Good luck, Carroll O

On 6volt systems I use a 00. The electrical systems are worn over the years and never 100% the way they were new. When the engine is hot the 00 will give you an edge when starting, especially with the volatile fuels today. Do Not use those green wheel kill switches. They are a current bottleneck and can't pull 250 amps through. Y & Z or Rhode Is Wiring will make cables for you. Have the measurements ready.
  • Well I put all new 2 gauge battery cables on and she spins over like a new one! Thanks for all of the help!!

I believe Dave Kostansek still offers the 6-volt cables at the length you need. Also, if you have a Tractor Supply near you, they have these, because so many tractors from the 6-volt era are still out there tilling the fields. (One of the benefits of my moving out to the country, has been easy access to Tractor Supply's!)
  • That is where I got them, trator supply. There is one right on the way home from work. It has been starting great! i should have done this long ago!
