Stepdown Door Pillar

I have just noticed this crack in the door pillar of my Pacemaker and there is a little bit on the other side also. Is this cracking a common issue?

The car has been back on the road for under a year now and I am very adverse to door slamming so this could be an issue raising its head from years ago. I was very surprised to see the cracking and it is now being remedied while it is in the panel and paint shop for other remedial work.

I am interested in others thoughts or experiences with this type of issue.

  • Alistair ,this is a problem for stepdown sedans and has been for years. Largely, it stems from a flaw in the design of the invisible 'b' pillar. The weakness in design of the pillar is further weakened over time by the shutting of the door (slamming included). Some years ago it was addressed in the WTN. Best thing to do is what apparently what you have already done and that is to weld the crack up and prevent any further damage. Anyone who has this setup should inspect their own cars. Driver's doors are generally the worst offenders.

Agree with the above, but would add a 18-16 gauge piece of sheetmetal on the back side and weld it all up good. Will never have the problem again.

Why MIG not TIG? Or did you mean MIG "or" TIG?
  • Chilton stated the correct way. Walt.

Ok, I wasn't sure if you were going to suggest one or the other because of the tensile strength of the weld or something. I haven't seen this crack before. But it sounds like a common thing?!? I'll have to check my car and see if I have the issue too. However, if I did have the crack, I too would fix it as you guys suggested. That's my two cents. :)
