    Where do these people get their information?

    That's not even close to accurate.

    According to Pat Fosters book, Hudson Automobiles, there was an economic downturn that affected Hudson sales to some degree. Hudson was also shut down for several weeks by a labor strike and that didn't help much. In 1938 the country was headed into another recession resulting in a 48 percent drop in production. The economy did improve somewhat in 1939 and so there was an almost 60 percent improvement over 1938.
