Can someone give me some basics on the Hudson Automatic Transmission functionality for 1951.

Mine appears to be 3 speed with R N, no park..I just put it in reverse and set the ebrake.

I'd like to know what if any shift point adjustments can be made - maybe some pics of what/where.
And what, if any linkage adjustments so that the shift indicators line up properly on the column.

Right now it drives ok, doesn't seem to slip any but, there's a really hard downshift to low gear...like whiplash hard..and will shift thru all gears withing 10 ft of being stopped (not a good thing!).

Seems to run thru the gears ok manually, no grinding sounds etc..oh..and how do you check the fluid..haven't poked around it that much yet...YES..I have checked then engine oil ;)

ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE FLOOR THERE IS A HOLE TO CHECK THE HYDROMATIC TRANS FULID. YOUR RIGHT YOUR 51SHOULD BE A 3 SPEED IN 52 THEY CAME OUT WITH THE 4 SPEED HYDROMATIC ALSO JUST FOR EVERY ONE THE 55,56 HYDROMATIC TRANS HAS A DIP STICK AND TUBE, THE PAN ALSO HAS A DRAIN PLUG IN IT SO IF YOU WANT TO MAKE IT EASY CHECKING THE TRANS FULID THIS PAN AND TUBE SET UP FITS THE EARLYER HYDROMATIC TRANSMISSIONS AS FOR THE OTHER QUESTIONS ASK GUS SOUZA HE IS THE MAN WHEN IT COMES TO HYDROMATICS NOT ONLINE YOU WILL HAVE TO CALL HIM

Its a very strong Trans even propelled Military Tanks & Trucks. The drawbacks, its cast iron, heavy, with no real converter... Im no Hydro expert, so Ive utilized 1950's Motors Manual with pictures for the adjustment procedure on the TP Rod on the driver side of the Trans to change shift harsness..The GM Turbo 350, 400, and Overdrives can be installed using an Adapter from Dany Spring or Randy Maas.

Dan, not sure about yours but my 51 with an automatic shifts 3 times and is a 4 speed. I have the same column indicators as your car, N,D,L,R. I have not tried to adjust the shift points but it shifts really quickly. My downshifts are not harsh but I do feel them. Richie.

Hudson put out a Hydramatic only shop manual, probably avail. at Alex' website. Hudson just bought them from GM so made by the tens of thousands over the years as Cadillac, Pontiac, and Olds used them too. We're considered literally indestructible.

    Hello Alex!

I bought a couple of your CD's a few years back - didn't realize it was online now.

The 51 Hydramatic Manual Scan looks beautiful - Nice Job!

I noticed theres some missing years/owners manuals etc. If we find something missing who do we contact about providing materials to get scanned to help add to the list?

You can scan material or have it done locally or send it to me and I'll scan it and return the manuals. The only thing I can't do is scan the fold out charts - I only have an 8=3/4 x 12 inch flatbed scanner. I've thought about going to a shop in the area that scans documents to see if I could get the fold-outs done, but so far think is as far as I've gone.
Condition isn't a problem - as long as it's at least readable. We can clean stuff for good scans. I do have to take the thicker manuals (over, oh, 60 or 65 pages and don't want to do good pristine manuals that way. Also manuals have a tendency to pull away from the staples in the middle pages. Age and short staples and I don't have a deep throat stapler either.
