Yes ,changing to a modern flex fan will aid in cooling. All other things being equal 20 degrees more cooling was gained when a friend put one on a 1949 Super with 262.
Get the right spacer for good right clearance,

Any advice on the type or model number of the flex fan and the spacer needed.

The fan should be min of 3/4 of an inch from the radiator - I think anything over 1.5" and you'll start losing efficiency.0

We used a Imperial Flex Fan by Hayden # 221618 . I dont remember the size spacer off hand .I want to say 1" comes to mind but as stated above its whatever gives you proper clearance,

Stay away from those plastic fans. Walt.0

I would not think a plastic fan is a good idea either . That Imperial one has Steel frame and flexible Stainless blades with good pitch to it. The centrifugal force straightens them as speed picks up . Provides similar effect to a clutch fan.

Speaking of fans, it is a very good idea to thoroughly check the blades, pulley and bolts regularly. I have seen the aftermath of a wayward fan blade through a hood/bonnet. Scary.0

Be carefull if you buy a stainless steel flex fan. The blades are dangerously sharp and will slice you quicker than a ginzu knife.0
