1937 Terraplane brake question

Doing a needed brake job on my '37 Hudson Terraplane model 71 sedan. I have the relined shoes and other components, when I took the shoes from the backing plate, there was in most cases a small spring about an inch long about a third of the way down hooked to the shoe. The book calls this an encentric spring and there is a stud benind it on the backing plate. the book says to adjust this shoe using a 10 thousands feeler gauge and adjust by turning the bolt on the backing plate. Is this necesary as the star wheel is there to adjust the brakes. The brake shoe parts house does not have those springs and when I took the brakes apart, two of those springs were broken. Are they needed and why? Thanks, Arnie in Nevada.

Do you have Walt Morndenti's book? He explains that process. PM him on this forum.0

Arnie, as far as I can see those springs are only there to keep the shoe hard against the eccentric for adjustment purposes, ie it keeps the shoe in place so you can check that you do have the required 10 thou clearance. I don't think it has any effect on the actual operation of the brakes.0
