It could be a problem with the carb, not tuned up correctly or oil getting by the valve guides. Is it dry black or oil black? Walt.

Dry black is carb is set to rich. What is the number on the brass tag? I then can send you all the adjustments and part numbers of the jets and metering rod. The only problem is you have to have the Carter repair tools to set it up. Walt.

The number you wrote is 749s. I still have all the original carter tools and the carter manuals for the settings. Started using them in 1945 when I started my Hudson garage business. Neither will ever be sold as they will go to a fellow that wants to keep my service available. Walt.

To identify what tools are required for your particular carburetor, search for Carter WA1 or the two barrel designation,overhaul instructions using the tag number of your carburetor. Examples 749S, 2113S etc. Once you have found the appropriate instructions for your particular carburetor it will provide the overhaul procedure and a listing of the tools required.

The carter tools used to rebuild Hudson WA-1 and other carburetors can be purchased from a variety of sources. I found a complete set of Hudson Carburetor tools at a reasonable price on Craigslist. You can purchase the required kits from a variety of sources including several Hudson Club members who purchase them for resale.
