Stepdown axle nut sizes
I'm working on a 54 Dana Spicer back axle at the moment. I've noticed that it has a 3/4" thread on the LH axle and a 5/8" thread on the RH axle. Is the 5/8" threaded axle one from an earlier stepdown or has someone made it a smaller thread because the original thread was burgered?

Bingo! The axles( both Hudson made and Dana Spicer) were for 3/4 " Watch your thread size. They are a bastard size of 20 tpi. Tough to find.0

And the "severe usage" axles have a finer thread than the standard ones.0

Thanks guys, good tip on the threads. Are the Dana and Hudson axle shafts interchangeable? I have a spare Hudson rear end to hand but no Dana.0

I found 3/4" 20 tpi castellated nuts at Rock Auto. Was listed as spindle nut for 56 Olds!!

Bob, The axles for Hudson built and Dana/ Spicer will NOT interchange. The Hudson is a tapered axle and has a few coarse splines while the Dana axle is straight and has fine splines Axle nuts , brake hardware and drums will interchange but not backing plates.0

If I'm not mistaken, I think MoPar used that same nut to hold their steering wheels on around the 1950 period.0

Thanks for all that good advice Hudzilla. I'll hunt down another Dana axle shaft.0
