We are currently in Yellowstone National Park. We drove our Hudson all the way from Wisconsin to Wyoming. Only a couple of minor issues. Car doesn't like the high elevation, but is learning to live with it, just like us!! We are getting pretty good mileage. It averages between 14 and 21 mpg!! Pictures to be posted at a later date!! Don't have any phone reception and very limited internet!! Currently using the computer at the lodge we are staying at!!

Good for you! A real Hudson Adventure! Take photos and notes. Your local HET chapter newsletter might be interested in running an article about your trip.... who knows?

Agreed good for you, enjoy the trip.
  • You need one size lean metering rods. Walt.
  • My brother Dale Brintnall left Massachusetts last Saturday in his 54 Hollywood. He will be getting into Denver Co today to visit his lady friends brother. They stopped in to see Dr Doug on Monday, saw Mt Rushmore yesterday. He also has had a couple if issues, but is still haveing a good trip so far.

Friend of mine (this isn't a Hudson story) from Cincinnatti OH just completed a run from New York City to San Francisco with the Lincoln Highway 100th Anniversary tour - driving a 1963 Valiant convertible. I think he was expecting more problems with the car than he had - so far the only problem has been a bad fuel line, which was, of course replaced. I think Charles Woodruffs book gave him a lot of confidence in making the trip. Other old cars in the trip were a 1948 and 1949 Packard - one of them busted a rear axle. Interesting that there is another post on this forum about somebody having a bad fuel line that Dr. Doug fixed for them - then a busted drive shaft right afterward - that Dr. Doug fixed for them.
Incidently, last night I copied the cover of the latest WTN and sent it to my wandering friend. He replied that he'd just left the Blue Swallow Motel. World's getting smaller.

  • Alex, That was Dale's 54 Hollywood that Doug worked on last Monday. He is presently in Idaho on his way to Portland Oregon to visit an old Coast Guard buddy. The he will come down the coast to San Mateo, expects to arrive there on Thursday.

Ok. Somebody mentioined on another post he'd had problems. It's been a pleasure knowing all you Brintnals - it was always great getting together at meets. Your parents were great folks. Another couple gone on to their rest and sadly missed.

Hope he gets to his destination safely. Our Hornet does NOT like the high altitude ...

The Ethanol gas is a problem and the jets are probably very rich.. Look at the bright side.. half the trip is down hill.

Isn't there something that you can put in the gas that takes care of the ethanol?
  • I have used ethanol in my Hudsons for 20 years with no problems. Of course I live where the elevations is 1000 feet. I drove my 51 hardtop to the Leadville Colorado meet and with 4 people in the car took a road that went way above the snow line. It would not idle but had the power to make it. I had the carbs leaned down as far as I could. according to the HET members that live in the higher elevations the size of the needle and seats in the carbs need to be smaller and they run fine. This is as I remember it but, its been along time ago.

The metering rods need to be a bit larger in diameter. That restricts the fuel flow a little more.
Last week I filled my 49 8 with NON ethanol. I can't tell if it is running at a traffic light! Soooo smooth.. When regular crap sells for 3.55, NON ethanol cost $4.29... Well worth it. . Florida just passed a law that says motor fuel does NOT have to contain ethanol. Only one station 9 miles from me carries it for now. I hope more stations join the band wagon and create a little competition. Even the lawn mower has more power.

Where do you find the NON-Ethanol, Dave?
  • I guess the definition of what is ethanol should be explained. Here in the Midwest (the real Midwest not Ohio like the news media says) ethanol is 10 percent alcohol and has an octane of 89. Regular, no alcohol, is 87 octane. Small air cooled engines should only us the 87 octane

When we were in Montana last summer we noticed that gas stations had gas labeled NON ETHANOL.

    Russ,
Until this station started selling it, the only source around here was marinas. Try doing a Google search in your area.
