Can any one tell me the year of my 8 cyl. In my 46 truck is# 620313. and my spare is # 941609.
These numbers are off the top of the block between #1&2 exhaust ports.

Thank you.

    If, and I stress IF, the first digit is the year then 620313 would be from 1946, made in March 1946. Looking at it that way 941609 would be 1949, made in Jan. 1949. Since you have the engine (620313) in your truck the engine number should be the same as the serial number, if original.

    the 2 engines you have are a bit different as on has the oblong pan and the other has the wider on one end pan that is stepdown both will work in your 46

    I didn't go quite far enough in my previus post - should have brought out the fact that commercial vehicles, ie pickup trucks, were only six cylinders.
    However, that said, a lot of pickups were converted over to 8's, 262's and 308 engines. I've seen one that had an 8 and the hood had the Commodore 8 logo on it

    Laurel Hanson , past HET president , had his converted to 8 cyl in the early 70's.
    Looked factory when finished. Had the eight emblems inside on the dash and also on the hood.
    Looked like a Commodore eight truck.

    Using casting numbers,and date codes would answer your question.
    150001 = 1936 8 cyl.
    152601 = 1937
    162451 = 1940-41
    165611 = 1946-47
    300000= 1948-49
    304300= 1952

    thanks to "Dr. Doug and Glenn Kellogg for assisting me with gathering this info.
    Sure wish someone else would contribute.

  • Thanks all. Ric, when you say casting numbers you talking about the big letters on the side of the block?
    PAULLARGETYPE, Im the guy that bought your NOS turn signals off you at the nationals. It looks great on my crome colum!
    My truck has all the 8 emblems on it, dash and hood, I like it. The fellow I bought the truck from told me It is real and one of six 46 trucks that left the factory as an 8 ( a wifes tail im sure). It came from the Lemays collection out of Seatle. I don't believe it for a second as a factory 8, as It has car front fenders and after I wet sanded it, it showed 3 differant paint colours on differant pannels.
    It also has over drive, and when im under the truck looking around at everything, It all looks real to me, so who knows.
    I can't remember who told me at the nationals, But if you orderd a motor from Hudson to put in a car/truck that wasn't a factory option ( done at the dealership) the engine came with no serial number, as all Hudons from this time frame came with matching numbers. any one confirm this?

    Thanks again

    Serial and engine numbers were the same from mid-1938 up. Most accessories were installed by your local dealer. The factory pushed dealers to sell accessories. A reall aggressive dealership could make a small fortune adding, say, Commodore items to a Super model, for example.

    Hi Paul, Yes, casting numbers were part of the mold at the foundry. These coupled with
    the date code can give you positive id of the block. Most were cast by CWC,,(Campbell,Wyant and Canon of Muskegon Mi. Some have a logo that I can't identify and some just have an H. CWC used a date code with Upper case letter for the month, A being
    January and numbers for the day and single digit for the year . so B 294 would be Feb 29, 1954. The ?? Foundry used a straight numerical casting date like 4-12-54.

    Would love to have input from forum members to fill in the blanks in my data. Esp. need
    Pacemaker and Wasp numbers as well as early 40's and 30's casting numbers. Please
    provide casting number and date code,

    Thanks!
