1934 Terraplane six engine photo request
Anybody have a photo of the coolant pipe/hose that goes from the radiator to the engine by the generator on a 1934 Terraplane 6 engine? I don't seem to be able to see it in the mechanical procedures manual or on any internet images. Mine was hacked up when an alternator was put on the car. I am interested in seeing what the original routing of that pipe/hose was. TKS

I don't have a photo in file but would be happy to take one for you tomorrow morning and post here. Need anything else?0

These two photos probably take care of your question. The water jacket has a 1.5" inlet pipe. There is an intermediate pipe bent in 90 degrees which is, of course also 1.5" diameter. There are two 1.5" diameter pieces of HD hose attaching all this to the radiator. The upper radiator neck has a .825" diameter pipe coming off of it as does the lower neck. This is a bypass in function and there is a piece of hose to connect the two.
The generator shown in not the original. This car has been converted to 12 V when a total new wiring harness was installed. So that is a Gener-Nator (alternator inside a generator case) providing this '34T with fast starting and bright lighting (and the ability to charge a cell phone or other 21st century electronics).

That's a lot of engineering for a bypass!0

Hudson was never know to underengineer or to cut a corner to make a profit.0

was there a change from '34 to '35 cars with a water level sender? on my '35 the curved pipe from the upper water level sender housing/bypass extends all the way down the side of the radiator and ends with a "flare" at the bottom. the O.D. of the flare matches the O.D. of the lower fitting where a short coupler hose was used. also on my '35 the "L" pipe from the water jacket to the radiator had a much longer leg so the coupling hose there was/is much shorter than in your pictures. perhaps your pipe was cut because the original rotted?? regards, tom0

Been several decades since I owned a '35 so can't comment /compare. This is a low mileage car - nothing rotted away. Some '35 owner(s) need to ring in.
'35 was the first year that Terraplane offered an optional actual water temp gauge. I've never seen one so I don't know where they placed the sender but the gauge was attached to the underside of the dash (in photos).0 -
OK - thanks ...very interesting. As I recall, I think Walt Mordenti converted it to 12V a decade-and-a-half ago, or so, and he put on auxiliary water temp and fuel gauges. Unfortunately it had cracked cylinder wall issues after that and has just gotten back on the road after installing a rebuilt 35 block ...what the guys did this time was they had the original fuel gauge repaired and set up to work on 12V and also had that "water level" gauge rebuilt so it works with a temp sender - so it looks original but the water level gauge was converted to function as a temperature gauge.0

dholck, where is the temperature sender now? drilled into the head, block, water distribution?

here are a couple of pictures ..including the engine compartment of a good looking '34 terraplane 6 on ebay. you can see in these pictures what i was talking about in regard to the bypass pipe extending all the way down the side of the radiator and the longer leg on the radiator to water jacket pipe. this is why i believe the car in the pics shown above had it's pipes cut and longer hoses inserted. regards, tom

The temp sender is drilled/tapped into the head where there seems to be a divot cast in there for the purpose.
The guys working on my car did not have the original pipe for an example and made a stainless steel pipe that curves around the generator. The other thing I can't explain is why my outlet comes out the top at the block, instead of out the bottom, as on the other several cars we've seen photos of...it's not like you could put that piece on backwards (or the outlet would be at the bottom rear).0 -
You have a later model water jacket cover, 1936-1947.

JUST GOT SOME PHOTOS FOR YOU BUT THESE ARE FROM MY 34 HUDSON 8 IT ONLY HAS 18,000 MILES SO I WOULD THINK IT'S ALL ORIGNAL IT DOES HAVE A WATER LEVEL NOT A TEMP GA.0

Paul, that is the identical configuration as my '35 sedan deluxe 6 cyl. regards, tom0
