Well, after several years of working the old 212, the soft plug rusted out at the back of the block. After I pulled the engine, Tom Black told me he fixes his old Buicks with a quarter and a little JB Weld. Too Late.
I had rescued this engine from Karkner's old 39 CC that the back door came loose on as we were trailering it up I90 in Albany, NY Fortunately, Jimmy Cook had tied it to the door post with a rope, as it was flying over the passing lane.
I rebuilt it probably 3 years ago and it was setting in the garage looking for a home. When I went to start it on the cradle, it ran awful and the compression was way down. That's with seats ground and NOS valves. Moisture had deposited little beads of rust between the valves and the seats. So had to do the drill, and now it runs nice and smooth.
Little problem. My front motor mounts don't hardly line up. Whatever will I do? Any suggestions?
I have a front mount on a stepdown 8, that's 20 inches wide, but it won't fit the 39 block and the ones for the big 6s are way off.,

If the rear mount and clutch linkage are in place I would fabricate new front mount brackets from the frame over to the motor plate either by welding or bolting. If a crossmember interfers cut out then reinforce the area cut.0

AAAAHHH WHERE DO I START IT'S THE WRONG COLOR AND IS THAT A SOLID COPPER HEAD??? JUST KIDDING IT LOOKS GOOD!!1 WILL THE MOUNTING PLATE OFF THE OLD SIX FIT ON THE NEW 8 CLY??0

I agree with Ol Racer about the rear mount and clutch linkage. If you can find an spare front mount plate, you can cut and weld to "stretch" the mount to make it line up with existing mounts. That is what I did to put the 202 into my 39 112.

with a cutting torch and a welder, you can make anything fit. LOL
Back in 1957 I actually put a V8 Olds motor in a Crosley. only problem, you had to sit in the back seat to drive it.0 -
Well, time for an update. I made some motor mounts from steel from an old Jeep. Looks like they're gonna work for now. Eventually I should marry the 39 with a stepdown front plate.
Paul, the plate on the 6 is only 16.5 wide vs 20 that I need.
I bought some radiator Z brackets from somebody to mount the thing, but do you think I can find them. Nope. Made these from steel from an old trailer hitch. Hope they're not too high. We'll see when we close the hood. Thought I'd get some help from the 40 but the brackets go toward the center to a much narrower radiator mount.
Filled it with water and ran it for about 10 min, adjusted the distributor (somthin' bites down in there) and the carb. Got some water weeping from the exhaust studs. Better seal them and/or get some proper studs instead of the threaded rod. Water jacket needs to be snorked up a little. Been a while since I put it on.
At least, it runs and drives.0 -
Re-do department. Just as I feared. The radiator brackets are too high. The mounting surface of the radiator can't be more than 1/2 inch above the cross member without hitting the hood. That leaves 3/8 for the bolt head and 1/8 for the bracket.0

"Use what you got" - that's what my grandpa taught me out in his old garage when I asked him why he kept all the extra "Stuff" that was around the shop.
He had drawers of odds and ends he was always rummaging thru.
In his honor and teaching I have a dedicated bottom drawer in my toolbox, completely full of odds and ends I constantly goto for missing screws...brackets to shape etc...it's the same snap-on bottom box I bought 30+ years ago and am still using today!
I love you're from that school too!0 -
Can you make a L shape bracket and bolt it with the front fender bolts in the second photo in stead of the top of the frame0
-
Got it! I reshaped the bracket with the torch, shortened and re-drilled it and the hood closes. Done!0
