308 head and 262 head

The brief answer is "No". The heads are interchangeable from '51 onwards, but if you tried to use a 262 gasket on a 308 it would overlap into the combustion chamber area. Lots of people use the 262 or even 232 heads on a 308 to get higher compression, but you must use a 308 gasket. Not sure about a 308 gasket on a 262 block, but this would lower the compression slightly as there would be areas not covered by the gasket.0

Geoff is correct,.To expand on Geoff's comment. Notice he said "'51onwards". 48-50 262's had a narrower block and head, so will not interchange.0

I will add that I have seen a wide block head on a narrow block. it hung over the drivers side of the block. It was running. I'm not sure , but I think it was a car from Jack Millers collection.
I was always curious about this. The car was sold and I forgot about it.

The car will run, but I'm sure you wouldn't want to head across country in it.....0
