Fuel Pump Issue

My '53 308 has been at rest for the last 20 months. It will not start due to lack of fuel. It appears the fuel pump is not pulling the fuel in from the gas tank. Does the pump need a rebuild? Does the pump need a prime? The engine will ignite the fuel I pour into the carburetor. The pump is the combination type. Any help will be appreciated as I am anxious to get her on the road. Thanks, Joe

i WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU DISCONNECT THE INTAKE SIDE OF THE FUEL PUMP AND RUN A HOSE FROM THERE TO A CONTAINER OF GAS THAT IS NOT COMMING FROM THE FUEL TANK..

cHECK ANY INLINE FUEL FILTER THAT MIGHT BE AFTER THE PUMP AND BEFORE THE CARB AND BE SURE IT IS NOT PLUGGED..

SEE IF BY TURNING THE CAR OVER IF IT WILL START...YOU MIGHT EVEN DISCONNECT THE FUEL LINE FROM THE PUMP TO THE CARB AND SEE IF ANY FUEL IS BEING PUMPED...

If this works then your pump is probably ok....Check this " BEFORE YOU DO ANY OTHER TROUBLE SHOOTING"..

Also check to see that there are no air leaks in the supply line from the tank. If there is, there pump will be sucking air. I had a small pin hole at the top of the steel pickup pipe INSIDE the tank! It took a while to find that one! Also, although not likely, the float valve in the carb could be stuck. They usually stick open..

How old is your pump? My '50C8 pump develop a bad leak due to alcohol damage from the current fuels. May want to make sure the diaphragm is not shot.

Did you have some sort of stabilizer in the fuel when parked? Todays ethanol starts breaking down when it is two to four WEEKS old and then continues. Eventually it turns to garbage that can clog up your carburetor and ruin the diaphram in your pump. If you had not put in ethanol resistant hose pieces at the tank and at the pump, they have likely internally collapsed. We currently have E-10 ethanol ("up to 10% corn alcohol")
The administration is pushing E-15 ethanol and at that point it will destroy not only the rubber but the metalurgy of our engines. For darn sure don't purchase any E-85 which is the cheapest thing in some local stations.
