8 Cylinder Thermostat

I have found several discussions about the 6 cylinder thermostats and plugging the bypass. On an 8 cylinder the bypass is in the neck. Do the same ideas apply with plugging the bypass and drilling a small hole in a modern thermostat? If the bypass is plugged and there is no heater core it appears that the water pump would have no source of intake water. If I leave the bypass open all the time it would appear I would just lose a small amount of cooling as some water wouldn't go to the radiator.

Any ideas?

  • I think you are slightly confused ,drill a hole in the plug you put in the bypass. Not a hole in your new thermostat . The set up should be the same for any model using a bypass type housing.

I'm not sure: is it that you now have a bypass-type setup? If so, is there a particular reason to change it over to non-bypass?

I once had the non-bypass setup on my Terraplane (6). Then for some reason I switched to the bypass system, installing a bypass type neck. In both cases, I had no problem plumbing my heater!

I have the bypass neck with the hose from the neck to the water pump, the thermostat closes off the bypass as it opens. I can't find a replacement bypass thermostat so I am looking for a solution using a modern thermostat. I was thinking that if I leave the bypass always open I am losing a good bit of cooling, if I plug it entirely I have no flow until the thermostat opens, so a plug with a small hole makes sense and sounds like a fairly common suggestion here for the 6s. I just wanted to ask if I was missing anything with the different neck on an 8.

You may not be able to find the bypass thermostats at your local parts store, but there are still new (old stock) ones out there! I have 3 or 4 extras, think I paid maybe $1 apiece at a flea market. You might try someone like Dave Kostansek or Carl Weber. Pick up a spare, just in case.

Here's one on Ebay now, but I think that, at $8, it's way overpriced! ebay.com/itm/Hudson-1936-52-NOS-Thermostat-/261268138731?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cd4cb6aeb&vxp=mtr
