Converting a Carter W1 to a manual choke

Has anyone ever done this ? Is it difficult ?
I'm absolutely fed up with the starting problems I have with the automatic choke on my 34 H8.

I have a few questions have you had the carb rebuilt with ethanol frendly kit this new gas is really a problen with the rubber on the end of the float valve it makes the rubber soft and sticky causing starting problems I to thought I had a choke problem until i got the right kit and rebuilt the carb ever sence no problems0

I actually have a Carter WGB carb with a factory manual choke conversion. Weird but true.0

The carb has been rebuilt with modern parts. It's not the original to the car; when I got the car from Norris Smith, it had a Stromberg. It's an LTS Series car that should have a manual choke anyway but I could only get a Carter W1 with the auto choke.0

All you have to do is change the choke housing and block off the vacuum hole. You should be able to arrange the fast idle. I've done this many times. Problem, finding the parts. Walt.0

One of the W1s I have appears to have a manual choke. PM me and I can send you some pictures.

I didn't realize they had automatic chokes that early. Is this the standard Climatic Control as on later Carters? My '37 automatic choke works flawlessly; maybe there is something simple that needs attention on yours.0

The auto chokes in that year had cork gaskets to seal them to draw heat to heat the choke spring. You can make those cork gaskets. It also has a carbon fiber piece that pulls the choke open. You can also make that piece. I do that with all the early carbs I repair. They take special jets, not like the later carbs. 32 to 35 are in a range all by themselves. You also have to have special tools to work on these carbs. Using screw drivers ruins the threads as some jets are 2 inches into the carb. Walt.0

I've now found out the manual choke conversion is something that some ROC people have done on Railtons and it's supposed to be straightforward, so I'll email Geoff Moore.
The problem with sorting out the climate control choke is that it's beyond a simple-minded lawyer like me and none of my more mechanically minded old car friends - nor the local restoration shops - can figure it out, even with my Mechanical Procedure Manual.0
