54 Hollywood has been sitting for a while . I have filed the points and now have spark and fuel . Still no start and a few backfires . Is it possible it jumped a timing tooth ?

Most likely some stuck valves if it was running OK when parked.

Do a compression test. If they are the exhaust valves, they are under the spark plugs. Remove them and tap lightly with a rod to snap them shut. May have to repeat for half an hour or so. Also you can hold the rod on the valve and turn it over to see if it goes up and down.

If the intakes are stuck, you'll probably have to take the inner fender and the valve covers off and get some penetrating oil in there, and a little persuasion with a tool of some kind.

Why do you all think it isn't a "gummed" up carb(s)? Fuel could be entering the float bowl but failing to flow through the jets & ports efficiently. Unless when parked it an issue, I don't see why timing jumped. Valves can stick if it sat for many years and water vapor got in or the like, still I like the odds of carb issues first. If gas was not drained well in the whole system then there can be hell to pay, especially without a fuel stabilizer added before parking. My thought anyway.
  • Well if you dont have a gauge to check compression you can get an idea of its condition .
Just remove the coil wire so its not firing and crank the engine. If it cranks uneven rather than smooth and steady you have issues. If it cranks smooth & even you probably dont have any valve issues.

Does that mean you started without spark? did you perhaps do a lot of trying filling the intake with gas before realizing that you didn't have spark?
anyway lets get back to where you've been. you worked on the distributor. your timing may be way off. bump it to UDC and set your re set your timing. get it running then advance it to get it running better.

Thank you all for your insight . Here is some more history on the car .

Engine was rebuilt less than 500 miles ago .
Car sat for about a year in my barn .
The dehumidifier in the barn wasn't working for three months.( got new one)
Car had no spark / I filed the points and got spark
Got fresh fuel and / I know I have fuel
It will only backfire after 30 seconds of cranking
( I'm leaning toward stuck valves but find it hard to believe since the engine is like new ?
I'm leaning toward soaking the cylinders n penetrating oil (kroil) but nervous ?new engine and all
    Thanks again all.

Sorry to hear about your problem . The Hornet ran so well as we cruised from NJ down to Front Royal last year. It was a great advert for Hudson!!

I was having problems with consistently hard hot-starting in my Hornet as well (Twin H). I did two things, one of which clearly resolved the problem, as I've not had a single recurrence afterward:

    1) replaced the starter solenoid with a Ford version that has a 2nd terminal to provide full 12V to coil during starting for a hotter starting spark

    2) Installed a Holley fuel pressure regulator, and set it, using a gauge, to about 2.5 lbs (I'm running an electric fuel pump.. engine pump still in place but not in the hose circuit)

It never cease's to amaze me how much wisdom lie's within this club. Thanks for all of your helpful thoughts on the issues with the 54 hollywood. In the end , My dad 82 years young, drove out from Long island to Ct to help me with my plight. He showed up equiped with timing light , compression tester and list of all the things to check (like all of you suggested to test). In the end, a set of new plugs and wires seemed to be the problem. Once we rechecked number one cylinder (udc) and made sure that we had the right plug firing at the right time, Bingo ....she roared to life like a champ. Thanks to all for the suggestions and thanks to Dad for making the trip. In the end , the Hudson brings family together and grounds us all . Thanks Dad for making the trip and thanks for buying your first 1948 hudson Super Six back in 1953.
