My '40 is chirping

When I start it up it chirps. Sounds like a fan belt chirp but it is not. Arms to come from around the carb. Increases with increased rpm. Goes away when warm. The colder it is in the morning the louder the chirp.

Looking for suggestions.

  • Looked again. Sounds almost like a bearing. What is on the right side of the motor below the carb that might make the sound?

    Heat riser?

Blown exhaust manifold gasket? Clearance takes up a bit when hot.

My T8 was making a strange and really faint high pitched noise that rose with rpm. It sounded like a miniature blower whine from a mile away. What it was was the carb mixture screw was too far in, and as soon as I wound it out a little the noise disappeared.
  • Thanks guys,
Checked the heat riser and it is still stuck in place. Just replaced the exhaust manifold gasket. Don't see any sign of a leak. Tightened the bolts when hot and could get them to move.

For these and the carb mixture screw I have ordered a stethoscope. The sound is intermittent so will have to wait for the stethoscope and the chirp to show its head.

The more I get to know this car the more I like it.
  • Noise Location can be very deceiving and difficult to pin point their location. I suggest you grease the water pump before tearing into this further. The pump ofter chirps when grease is needed. The Ford club has reproduced water pump grease.

  • Could this be the bearing in the distributor ? They require oil regularly , never heard one squeak but have seen worn out ones.

  • Soon after all this advice the chirp went away. Have not been able to use the stethoscope.

Just in case I greased the water pump, turned the distributor grease cup, adjusted the carb, torqued the exhaust manifold gasket and lubed the heat riser. Fingers crossed.

    Thanks guys
